Default Grading patch cards-my experience

I have submitted to Beckett and SGC but only have the Beckett ones back/grades popped. The first I sent a 2017 Mahomes encased that got a 7.5. It had a small dimple on the back so I thought it was ok. I sent a Kyler Murray encased and it came back a 8.5. There was no issues with the card and I was shocked it was a 8.5. I sent a few more and got mostly 8.5-8. Again they were much better condition than my 7.5 Mahomes.. in the end probably not worth submitting patch cards..

Thick cards with patches/relics are notoriously awful with edges and corners. You might already do this, but a bright light and a magnifying loop picks almost everything up. It’s easy to see bad corners if the card has a dark surface, not so easy to see if the surface is white. Thick patch Cards I thought were mint turn out to be nrmt upon closer inspection.

Yea i thought I looked at my 8.5 pretty close but I did not use a loop.

Yeah, even right out of the pack there can be issues. There's a bigger risk/reward scenario though as it's harder to get a 9 or 10 grade but if you do, the value is much higher depending on the card due to the difficulty in getting such a high grade.

So what is better a patch card graded an 8.5 or raw?

As a seller, you're probably better selling it raw as some buyer may believe they can still get a 9 or higher out of the card.

As a buyer, I'd prefer the 8.5 grade mostly because I know the inherent difficulties in getting high grades for a jersey card.

I have received a couple of BGS 9.5 grades on patch cards. Not easy. Otherwise, the slab is just a nice holder.

As a buyer, I'm both aware that an 8.5 is a solid grade on a patch card - I'd rate it at somewhere between a 9 and a 9.5 on a non-patch - but also have no interest in buying one. My real world enjoyment of a patch auto being a 7.5 versus an 8.5 is pretty much the same, but seeing a modern card in an 8.5 slab is more of an emotional drag than it is an emotional upside, so I'd rather just have raw cards at that point.
