Default 1979 OPC Gretzky PSA 9’s

The card has made a massive price jump recently. From July to Sep there were 4 recorded sales between 50-54k. But in the past 2 weeks one sold for 63k (https://www.ebay.com/itm/193683749584) and another (that was the nicest 9 I’ve ever seen) sold for 82.5k (https://www.ebay.com/itm/372737417466). I was trying to get one in the previous range of about 50k but now these 2 recent comps have taken it to a new level. Where do you guys think this card is going? I view it as the most iconic modern hockey card to have similar to the 86 Fleer Jordan but much less plentiful in high grades.

I used to have such a gorgeous OPC Gretzky that had razor shape corners but was badly OC and graded a 1.5.
Dang I wish I still had that card
Iconic card in any grade and it is fantastic to see the love this card, in high grade, is getting!

I recently picked up a low grade BVG 3.5 OPC as I believe in the Gretzky OPC hype. And I'm 100% on the sidelines waiting for a dip to upgrade to something higher, if that ever happens. Price have stabilized for the low to mid grade stuff in the last month or so.

The only way I see Gretzky OPC RC dipping significantly is if the entire sports card market dips or someone discovered a huge stash of ungraded mint copies.

Unlikely, but possible. I woulnd't mind a market drop like that so I could pick one up

I almost bought one for $30k on eBay, but then BODA happened and I knew better.

Anyone who knows anything about the Gretzky OPC rookie knows that buyers have so many different options for eye appeal (OPC rough cut, registration, roller marks "first print" lines that aren't actually first prints, centering, centering of the oil drop in logo on front of card, etc cetera). Some of the nicest Gretzky OPC rookies are not in PSA 9 holders.

^^^ When it comes to Gretzky the time to buy is always right now. They're never going to get any cheaper.

This is very true. The possible combinations are endless. Centering, color, image blur, oil drop, rough cuts, sometimes really rough cuts on one side or another, blue lines, etc etc. And that's just talking about the print of the card itself never mind general condition like corners and creases and whatnot. People will pay the going rate of a card two grades up if the lower one has the right eye appeal.

This is what made me pull the trigger on one recently. I was hoping they would drop a little bit so I could save some money but then said f it I'm just getting it now. It's not a 9 but I love the way it looks. Now I am hooked on hockey cards.

Centering L-R is awesome, and T-B pretty close too. Very nice registration and I love the rough cut. Beautiful 8.
I'm currently looking now as well. Trying to find a well centered 7.

Congratulations. That is an amazing PSA 8 card. I can understand you want a 9, but you have an excellent condition Gretzky card.

Its glorious! Very well done.

Here's my lowly BVG 3.5. Diamond cut, o/c and a couple wrinkles but I love it so much.

Gretzky prices definitely dipped the last month or so and I really wanted to upgrade to a 5ish range card but I was too busy buying up all sorts of other good stuff. Got a little gun shy on the current market prices and was worried the dip could turn into a drop... that seems to all be gone the last week or so thought. Cards are flying off my ebay and facebook listings at very strong prices.

This is one of the few hockey cards I believe is recession proof. I don't see the value ever coming down. Too many new collectors driving those recent prices.

I feel I saw a dip recently.
You know Jordan rcs have gone down 50% before...

When you go to the expo and see hundreds of Gretzky rcs on just one table you get less excited about owning one.

The Gretzky RC at the Expo is like the the Jordan RC at the National...

But if you go to The National, you'll see very few Gretzky's in comparison...

Living on the Left Coast I've never been to the Expo.
Do many Gretzky RCs actually sell, or is it mostly museum showcases and showing off?

Really kicking myself (repeatedly) for not buying one a year ago. Was looking at PSA 4 or 5 and shouldn't have hesitated.

Do you enjoy anything at all?

Also we don't all get to go to the expo. A Gretzky RC where I live may as well be an original Da Vinci. I'm certainly quite excited to own mine.
