Default Sticker Auto Products

New to the hobby, are these sticker auto's? Why are they even a product?

Yes, those are sticker autos.

They are a product because its easier, cheaper and quicker for companies to have players sign stickers and then slap them on cards for many sets/years to come.

Yep, those are stickers. They are a necassary evil in today's hobby.

If you're a podcast guy, here's an episode that goes into detail about sticker autos and why they exist.

Wow, even "The Cup" has sticker auto's? At least it's somewhat obvious to spot, crazy that people would drop considerable money for these.

Sticker auto only because Pasta wouldn't sign them. These just got sent back as redeemed from UD this year I believe- 5 years later.

Yeah, Pastrnak is the single, sole sticker auto that I've ever seen in The Cup, and not wanting to do a sticker is probably why it took so long to do the redemption.

For hockey - the sticker auto products are the early in the year products. I would imagine that's because it takes time to get cards produced, get them to players to sign, get them signed, and get them back to be collated into packs. For rookies and draftees, they can have them sign a bunch of stickers and not worry about what team they are going to be on, so they can get the cards out much earlier.

It winds up where the top end products all get stacked on the back end of the release schedule - SPA, Premier, Ultimate Collection, Engrained, Ice, and Stature were all exclusively on card autos or redemptions, and they all came out May or later this year. I think OPC Platinum is the earliest on card auto release of the year, and it doesn't even have a release date for 20-21 yet.

Yep, the Pasta Cup RPA was a sticker. And due to the demand on this card, it was going to sell well whenever it was eventually released (sticker or no sticker), so UD had to make a choice because Pasta wasn't signing.

Sticker Auto or No card.

All this still blows my mind how they can’t or this isn’t enforced. I can understand a year but after several years the player just seems to be refusing to do this really is BS on the players part. You would think they have contracts or something for it. I understand you might piss off a player but dang.

Gostisbhere
Markus Granlund
Jack Campbell

Those three also have Cup rookies with sticker autos.

They do have contracts/agreements in place, but there is only so much Upper Deck can do. Plus, they aren't even in contact with the player directly in these scenarios. They are in contact with the player's agent, which makes it harder if the player isn't signing.

UD won't want to ruin the working relationships with these players. So they have to sit back and wait it out, unfortuntaly.

I've seen it playout on both sides. Heard stuff straight from Upper Deck, while also hearing the player ends of this as my cousin is in the NHL and had signed for UD.

What kills me other than the stickers is the chicken scratch from the majority of players. I’ve seen autos that are nothing more than a check mark which is a joke.
