Default What 2016 thought of 2021

I was bored today, so went reading some old articles and I came across one that was the projection of the hottest players would be in five years, which was 2021.

This was really telling to me as to how much the sport can change in just five year!

According to the article, the hottest players in 2021 would be:

Catcher - Salvador Perez
First Base - Anthony Rizzo
Second Base - Jose Altuve
Shortstop - Carlos Correa
Third Base - Manny Machado
OF - Mookie Betts
OF - Mike Trout
OF - Bryce Harper

While these were the hottest players five years ago, I think my list would be just a tad different today.

Catcher - JT Realmuto
First Base - Freddie Freeman
Second Base - DJ LeMahieu
Shortstop - Fernando Tatis Jr
Third Base - Jose Ramirez
OF - Mookie Betts
OF - Mike Trout
OF - Ronald Acuna Jr

So the only ones I say they got right was Mookie and Trout.

What would you guys say the best lineup would be going into 2021?

I was on the fence between Machado and Ramirez when it came to 3rd. I could see Machado being there, but I think Ramirez will have the better year. We will know in about ten months!

Pretty sure they already have.

Hobby strength in 2021? I’d take arenado at 3rd if asking best 3rd baseman

Not hobby wise, solely based on baseball skills.

Every player is a top in their position, with the exception of probably Correa at SS. Freeman wasn’t even discussed in the article, and he is clearly the best 1B in the game right now IMHO.

Was that start of 2016 or end of 2016? I am surprised Kris Bryant not anywhere on that list in retrospect.

That’s not a bad list from 5 years ago. Almost all of them could have a good year in 2021 and it wouldn’t be a surprise.

I didn’t keep the article, but I believe it was April 2016, so beginning of the year. I could be wrong on that.

He is absolutely a top 5 backstop right now, probably even top 3 but I don’t think I could put him above Yadier Molina and JT Realmuto.

True, not a bad list. Just shows how the mighty have fallen with the Astros, none of them would be on a list for 2021, with the exception of maybe Yordan as a DH.

I thought the same, for being 5 years old and before Soto, Acuna, Tatis, etc was on anyone's radar. All of those guys are if nothing else still among the better players at their position
