Default Are definite HOF'ers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer flagship PSA 10's undervalued?

A 2008 Topps U&H Scherzer PSA 10 just sold eBay auction for $273 and I see 2005 Topps Verlander PSA 10's going for around $300

Verlander is out this year....so his card values may come down. But Scherzer should be back.

Is now the time to buy these cards...at the very least Scherzer's?

I think they are ripe for an increase. I think that 2002-2010 rookies in general are undervalued, but especially the pitchers. People say that pitchers don't get hobby attention, but the previous generation had plenty of hobby darlings that still maintain value (Maddux, Johnson, Martinez etc...). I think part of the problem is figuring out how modern numbers will be evaluated by pundits, collectors, and ultimately HOF voters.

i think they are priced correctly. they are pitchers

Verlander is also in the 2005 Factory Set, so that does not help

They are very accurately priced. Doesn’t mean there isn’t some buying opportunities to be found, but if you want to buy “current pitchers who will make the HOF”, you should really only be getting Kershaw and Scherzer. I’m not saying guys like Greinke and Verlander won’t make the HOF, I just don’t think they get the same hobby/media/fan love that Kershaw and Scherzer do.

.... and for those of you into Wax, both are in the 2008 Topps updates/ highlights ( or highlights/updates —— one of those 2!) wax boxes . Last hobby box ( fairly rare ) sold on eBay a few months ago for $480. Wax that old with 2 FHOF’ers is a bargain!

Is this a running joke or some new strange cult-like mantra? High end HOF pitchers sell reasonably well compared to their counterparts. Kershaw, Scherzer, and maybe 2-3 others still have plenty of room to grow.

Verlander has had a better career than Scherzer...

I wouldn't be buying PSA 10's of anything as an investment.

Prices are so inflated right now that eventually the price gap between PSA 9's and PSA 10's will begin to contract, especially for modern cards where PSA 10's are fairly common.

No, they are third-tier HOFers. No fan following, no hobby following means no returns. Stick to the GOATs like Griffey, Mantle, Nolan.

So I don't know what you're comparing the flagship PSA 10 prices to, but I got a Verlander 05 BCP Blue Ref Auto 9.5/10 for $315 in late 2017. That's some pretty decent appreciation in a little over 3 years.

Ok, but the OP is also saying Verlander's flagship sells for more, so I really don't understand what you were saying.

I’m saying that, in my opinion, Scherzer gets more hobby/media/fan love than Verlander. Besides Tigers or Astros fans, I’m not sure how many people would say they like Verlander more than Scherzer. Verlander has never really tried to endear himself to the fans, and he openly hates the baseball media. Verlander will easily make the HOF, but in the long run, I think Scherzer could see higher card values.

While possibly lucrative, what a boring collection. HOF players, even third tier ones, eventually get hobby love. I'd argue that none of the pitchers mentioned here are third tier either. Everyone keeps saying that pitchers have low value and no following. I think the constant denigration of collecting modern pitchers will eventually shift to mirror historical trends where the top few pitchers pf each generation are valued reasonably well.

If you're comparing them to LeBron,Kobe and Trout PSA 10's...everyone is undervalued

100% they are undervalued. You are talking about players that will be in the HOF. Larry Walker Leaf PSA 10s are 100-125. They are 2-3x him and not really going out on a limb but they will end up with better careers than him, by far.

I think pitchers like Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez are undervalued more then Justin and Max.

Assuming a full and healthy season Scherzer should break 3000K late in the year. Could give his cards some pop.

Randy’s RCs came out during the junk wax era which explains his low values. His Topps Tiffany RC gets plenty of love, though.
