Very sad news
When anyone's parent passes I feel bad and it brings up memories

Unfortunately, Canadian sports media is going completely overboard on the melodrama. It's like each outlet is trying to out-do the other proving they are much more sad than their competitors.

I honestly was shocked to read he was ONLY 82, he seemed to be 80+ for forever, I thought he was in his 90s +

Canada's most famous son, which has to make him Canada's most famous dad.
If you followed hockey, you knew Walter Gretzky.

I hope they turn his boyhood home into a shrine or something, his father kept a lot of great memorabilia there.

I thought the kobe stuff was way over the top and I generally agree w/this line of thot but here it seems appropriate. People I know that have followed waynes career say a big part of why he was so beloved as a person off the ice was walter and his impact on wayne as a person. It's usually the first thing they bring up in talking about their experiences w/99. They say that he made sure that despite waynes success he never became as a person w/fans, the community, and media the aloof, closed off person that lebron, jordan, and bird and so many other stars became and I think that has a lot to do w/why there's so much love for him today.

I agree

But TSN, SCORE, & SN are going way over-the-top on their coverage. I mean, come on, Gino Reda was crying and it seems every single one of the talking heads was Wally's best friend.

Wally was great with fans especially kids. I'll always remember the story years back when Wally invited Makarov, Larionov, and Fetisov to his house for a BBQ during the '87 Canada Cup in Hamilton and Phyllis wouldn't let the "drivers" (KGB agents for sure) into her house.

Tough day. The world was a better place with Walter. He loved the game of hockey. He touched us all with his core values. After his recovery from aneurysm he made really good use of his time by working tirelessly with communities and charities. He made a difference is what the media is trying to portray. Rest in Peace Wally

RIP Walter, but come on...Louis Sutter is unquestionably the greatest hockey dad ever.

6 kids played in the NHL. Six. And supposedly the oldest brother, who never pursued hockey, was the best of them.
