Default 1996-97 Ultra Platinum Medallion help

I recently picked up a rare-ish PC card - 1996 John Wallace Ultra Platinum Medallion RC. The pics weren’t the best when I bought this, but I didn’t mind because I wasn’t too concerned about condition. I just wanted the card for my binder and I bought this one since I rarely, if ever, see these come up for sale.

However, when I got the card, I noticed that the foil on the front just looked like the standard silver foil on the base cards from this set. The foil on the Platinum Medallions should have a shimmer-like look to them. The back of the card shows the number as P-76, so that looks like the other platinum medallions I’ve seen.

Has anyone experienced a 96 Fleer Ultra card like this before? I know there were fakes out there for some of the bigger cards in the set like Kobe and MJ, but I can’t imagine anyone wasting their time to create a fake John Wallace card with the right numbering on the back, but the wrong foil on the front.

Here’s a photo of the front and back:

I think I have seen a few error cards like that. There were a good amount of printing problems in the mid to late 90’s so I wouldn’t be surprised. The font seems to match

Cool! Have never seen one like this but doesn't surprise me. I have a base Kukoc with no foil on the front at all.

Yes, I’ve seen a few Jordans and Probstein has/had one up for auction very recently.

Thanks everyone! I’ll just chalk this up as an even rarer card than the regular Platinum Medallions, and feel good that I have something that is pretty uncommon, haha. In the meantime, I’ll still be on the lookout for one with the platinum foil finish on the front, maybe one of them will pop up someday.

I just looked and I think this is the MJ you’re talking about:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1996-97-Fle....m46890.l49292

EDIT - looks like this has been relisted a few times. It “sold” on 3/4 for $3800 and then again on 3/22 for $1995, and now it’s up for auction again.

ha, you'll make me go through mine by checking the backs and see if I have any platinum that don't have any foil finishes

Not sure if it was by accident or design, but they definite had QA and/or coalition issues. I pulled both of these out of the same pack, which kind of tells me the error is most likely on the back side.

Yeah I really won’t consider all these errors to be Platinum medallions, but the grading companies don’t seem to care.

No the first year was not numbered. There might have been a print run announced.

Yep, my mistake. I was thinking about the die cut ones from 99/00
