Default Goldin auctions ended tonight with major price correction

https://goldinauctions.com/catalog.aspx

The Curry NT RPA /99 BGS 9.5 ended just $160K. The last one that was BGS 9 on Goldin sold for something like $350K

The Kobe Topps Chrome refractor BGS 10 sold for just $300K.

Also the KD Exquistie RPA /99 BGS 8.5 sold for $85K.

These prices are down so much compared to the last few Goldins' records. Is this the price correction everyone was expecting?

These aren’t 1/1s or tough to find cards. There are only so many buyers spending over $100k for a single card. When you keep seeing the same big cards auctioned every time who is going to keep buying them all at higher prices?

Goldin's auctioning off too much. If you have a ultra high-end card, just hold. Plus, you can see how the high-end market just has not matured. A Trae Young RPA selling for more than multiple high-end Kobe rookie refractors?! An NT /10 Doncic selling for 3x more than a base NT RPA /99?!

It'll settle down at some point, but prices are all over the place.

The cards I was watching went nuts. In a positive, upward way.

And yet a LeBron 2012 Prizm Gold that got buried in lot #368 or something and had almost no promotion sold for over $575k.

Hmmm

Strong price, that card is something else. If I had the bankroll I'd pay whatever it took. Any idea how the other golds did?

And an 8.5 Brady Contenders Championship ticket sold for 2.5 mill. I almost had a 9 several years ago for $10K. I could be on a beach in the Carribbean right now sipping Bahama mammas. Story of my life.

Haha nice, the golden ticket right there!! 500k+ on the Bron was my ballpark guess, longer run I think it's got a chance as a 1mil+ card. Key card from the key set of the 10s.

Hmmm

Good move on the part of the buyer. The 2012 Prizm Gold Lebron is one of the great modern cards.

This market is crazy. Nowadays there are just so many $50,000+ cards being listed. I think it's partly due to the fact it seems people don't keep their cards as long as they once did but I may be wrong on that. I'm very curious & I think about which card going for under $5,000 now will be say $50,000+ in a few years. It's all an educated guessing game really.

Yeah, this was pretty bad overall. I mean there's good and bad, but for the ultra high end not good. Didn't a Mantle PSA 8 for like 1.5 million in January? Now one went for $840,000 tonight. That's a HUGE drop off. Where are all the celebs pumping? Stuff way down across the board. Luka Gold Prizm PSA 10 down about 200k from the last one. PSA 10 Kobe Refractor went for $160k when previous went for 500k. CRAZY. Some investors cannot be happy right now.

There is no doubt the opening up of the economy is having an affect. I guess everyone was right - things can't go up forever.

Although i do not deny that prices are down (which is healthy for the market due to unsustainability of prices constantly going up), a few key facts have to be pointed out:

1) The Curry rpa that sold had a 9 auto which spilled over to the patch area;
2) The Kobe chrome refractor BGS 10 has lost most of its brown and is green beyond recognition; and
3) The KD that sold last time was an rpa /25 not /99

Is it just me, or does it seem like the stuff that didn't do as well was stuff that had already had copies sell over the past few months.

Heck, even some of that stuff did okay....

A Mahomes NT Rooke Materials Sig Gold PSA 10 that went for $140k on ebay back in Jan sold for $180k after BP.

The other seemingly winners tonight were:
-2012 Prizm Golds
-2017 Mahomes Optic Gold ( Sold for $51k on ebay in Jan, $60k tonight with BP)
-Dwayne Johnson Miami PSA 10 Rookie for $79k
-LeBron 2019 Prizm Gold PSA 9 $54k

Some thoughts after a night of poker:

-Money is not infinite

-Nothing can continually rise 100-200-300%. Even 30% year to year gains aren’t the norm. Investment worthy cards were traditionally 3% gainers. If they bumped to the 7-10% range, that puts them in line with retirement investments.

-I’m wondering if the OGs who swore off Panini are going to start circling that wagon? Most who have been around for a while already have all the RPAs, 90s Grails, Vintage they could possibly want. The only stuff left to complete collections is the Panini era stuff.

As always, fun times. Interesting to see everybody’s takeaways.

I've been convinced for some time that early panini stuff that was very limited would end up becoming the next era of rare 90s.

Prizm Golds, very early, high grade Silvers, Galactics... that kind of stuff... are ever more rare than almost anything we saw in the 90s (other than PMG Greens and some Credentials).

Think of all the money being spent on new Luka, Zion, 2020-21 Prizm LeBron, Lamelo.... and you can see how people will end up going all out for key LeBrons, Currys, Giannis', Brady's, etc, that have miniscule pops.

Yeah we’ve always been on the same page with that thought. Just wondering if this Gold was kind of the wake up call. My Panini list has always been short:

-2012 Golds
-2015 Galactics

As far as the tippy-top of Panini high-end. Other sets are knocking at the door, but that’s the list right now. Since most can’t find or stretch for that stuff, it may be the time to start pivoting again (as always).
