Default 1986 Fleer Pack - crazy to buy ?

Is it crazy to buy even a PSA 1986 Fleer Wax Pack? Is it possible to see who is on top of every pack or just some packs?

Would love to buy, but seems crazy to buy on Ebay for $1000 as 100% searched or even PSA slabs for $5000 seem like it would be tough to land Jordan and even with a Barkley, Akeem, etc in a 9 would not even be worth it.

It would be complete and utter insanity to buy a 1986 Fleer Wax pack. 90% of the packs are probably searched on eBay or made by scammers. People sell the wrappers for huge money. Why do the wrappers sell for so much??? To rip you off!

Getting a PSA 9 from an unopened pack is also insanely difficult. The centering of those cards is horrific and you would be lucky to get a PSA 7 out of a pack. PSA 9 common cards go for big money, it is hard to find a near perfect card even pack fresh.

People always overpay for wax, it is a gamble people like taking. The ROI from any pack these days is probably 25% at best. If you want a 1986 Fleer card, buy a nice PSA 8. The prices have come down recently and there are some decent values out there.

This...........and i opened about a case worth of the stuff in the 80's.I can Attest to what the quoted post says as being exactly right. Now if you want to buy it in a PSA holder as an investment and leave it unopened that "might" be worth it,and yes you can see thru all the packs, the coalition is exact on 86-88 fleer and anyone can do a little research to learn whats in any given pack.Though with the caveat that at certain points the order of the cards can shift,i can remember at some point in the box (not every box) i would get half way through a pack and the cards would be upside down and the order would change. This was back in 86-87 so i know there was no way it wasn't factory done, hell dealers couldn't give the stuff away back then.

Only buy psa graded.

Many can be seen on the front but not all.

Relatedly I relooked my graded packs and 95% sure one is the Olajuwon run and one is the Barkley. Point being people only looked for MJ

You have a 1:9 shot at landing any player in the set - those are tremendously good odds. The odds of pulling a pack with none of the stars and/or rookies is practically zero.

There's a sequence to every 1986 Fleer box and the pack(s) with the Jordan(s) is/are easy to pick out. There's a 99% chance you'll get nada if you purchase a single pack unless the seller is a complete rube.

Those odds are a bit skewed as many of the existing graded packs do not have Jordan in the pack unless noted. The sequence is widely known and unless the sequence flips halfway through the pack just about all those packs will not give you a Jordan. Given the cost of the graded packs, you are almost guaranteed to lose money when busting a pack.

As mentioned, never buy an ungraded 1986 fleer basketball pack on eBay or just about anywhere else. The chances of that pack being legit is zero.

I happen to agree that if the card on the front of the pack can be seen, you have no chance at a Jordan because any of the "Jordan sequence" packs would have been opened. However, the front card can't always be determined.

And while it's true you may not get your thousands out of a pack, no one gets skunked. You're going to get a Magic/Bird/Ewing/Thomas/Wilkins/Worthy/Malone/Dumars/Drexler or some combination. As packs go, 86 to 88 Fleer are a gold mine because they are such tiny sets.

It's not like buying a 1980 Topps baseball pack and trying to pull a Henderson. THAT is a waste of money.

What if you pull all 1986 baseball cards instead? Lol.

While I agree that there is zero reason to buy an ungraded pack and also agree that centering is a big issue, mint cards are not that uncommon.

Tons of these packs have been opened the last few years and the pops on 9's have really climbed. I subbed 31 that I picked up raw at the National in 2019 and the majority came back 8.5 and 9.

PSA 9 commons don't really bring "big money". Truth is, most of the commons in PSA 9 can be picked up for $40-50 right now.

Prices came down a lot on the commons. Everything seems to be rising again from that set, seems like commons are approaching $60. I thought I remembered them being $100 at one point.

Luck of the draw on the packs. Seems like centering could be absolutely horrible for the pack or pretty decent. No way I personally take a risk like that.

I wish I bought more of these last year. I concentrated on 1988 Fleer rookies because of the cheaper prices. I only have the Thomas, Olajuwon, and Ewing from that set which I bought raw and submitted to PSA in bulk . Once I get back my 1988 Fleer graded cards I will sell the duplicates to buy the 1986 rookies I am missing.
