Default PSA Reslab turns into Regrade. Help!!!

Hi everyone,

I could use a little guidance here. I had 3 slabs returned to me early 2020 due to them being cracked in transit to a buyer. When I got them back I sent them in to PSA to get reslabbed. They were all still in their cracked cases with labels in them.

All 3 cards were PSA 10’s. I just received them back today from PSA and was given 2 PSA 10’s and.....

A PSA 4!!!!

How is this possible? Has anyone ever encountered this? Why wouldn’t this just get put into a new case? My card has gone from valuable to basically worthless. Please let me know if you’ve run into this and if there was any resolution. Thanks!

Cards can get damaged in the slab...especially if they’re handled so roughly that they crack. Since you were shipping them, you’re the responsible party unless you had insurance.

I think you’re missing my question. I’m not asking who is responsible for the damage.

Why was PSA even re-examining the card? It was a reslab of a cracked/defective case.

Because the case was cracked. If you run over a card with your car, you expect PSA to recase it with the same grade? If you throw your card in a pool, you expect PSA to recase it with the same grade? If you put your card in an oven, you expect PSA to recase it with the same grade?

If the card was damaged due to the case being cracked they can't simply ignore the damage and re-slab it as a 10.

It just keeps getting worse and worse for these so called grading companies...

The integrity of the case was gone, of course it has to be regraded. If the card is now legitimately a 4, you expect them to just put it in a brand new PSA 10 case?

As I type that out, I'm actually surprised they didn't, but you can't fault them for getting this one right.

I am having a hard time understanding why anyone would think they'd just take a card from a damaged case and reslab it without checking and not assume there might have been some damage to the card as well.

Because most people don’t even think there’s a card in the slab, only a label with a number on it...

I can see why you'd be frustrated...

But if the card was damaged (which it appears obvious it was) I'm happy they regraded it a 4.

A card is subject to regrade if the damage/crack of the slab is directly over the card. If the crack/damage is on the side of the case or over the label (not over the card), it is still subject to regrade but less likely.

Right from PSA's pricing page:

Quote:
Please note: All items will be automatically reholdered UNLESS (1) the sonic weld on the PSA case shows signs of tampering or (2) the PSA case is fractured over the item itself. If the case is fractured over/near the item, it will be examined raw to ensure it has not sustained damage and that the original grade is still valid.
It must have been damaged, the original grade was no longer valid, so they gave it an appropriate grade. Were you expecting them to ignore the damage and just keep it as a 10?

It’s like you guys don’t read what the services PSA offers are. It’s clearly stated here “cards will not be graded”. I’m not a moron and understand a card could be damaged if a case is cracked. IMO in this case, it was not.

Even if it was, the service I selected does not have a card review. So, again, if anyone has delay with this please let me know.

Look at the post right above yours. That snippet is on the main pricing page in the reholder section.

I didn’t fee the card was damaged. I can’t recall where on the case it was cracked as it was so long ago. It would shock me that both other cards remained fine and one did not.

If it was some obvious damage I guess I’d expect them to just not reslab and send back. It’s just a very unexpected outcome for something that seems so routine.

This is not a reholder as defined in the screen shot. That says “the “reholder” service applies to trading cards that are currently graded and encapsulated by PSA that the customer would like placed into the most current PSA holder.

That was not the case for your submission. Unfortunately we’ve had this happen a couple of times and it’s good that they regrade it bc the card is probably damaged. We’ve had this happen when we’ve shipped cards and have had to eat the difference. We’ve also had a couple that there was something inside the slab after slabbing which caused damage, the grade changed and PSA compensated us for the difference in value.

This makes more sense. Thanks Josh. I was reading it as it applied to a reholder but I guess that doesn’t apply here. Thanks for a useful response.

Non-collector price manipulation in a separate “hobby” that has little to do with cards.
