Default Finalists for MVP announced, who ya got?

The NBA announced that the Joker, Steph and Embiid are the top 3 finalists. Who wins it and why? Discuss.

The defensive MVP top 3 are Golbert, D. Green, and Simmons

MVP: Jokic.

He played the most games and IMO contributed to more wins than anyone else. This isn't the Best Player On The Planet award, this it Most Valuable. He provided to most value to his team in getting Denver to the 3 seed.

DPOY: Ben Simmons. Was the defensive standout on the second best defense in the league. Took on many of the toughest defensive assignments night in and night out across 4 positions.

These are just my opinions... a lot of good candidates on those lists.

I’m actually leaning towards Steph as MVP, but Jokic deserves it just as much.

Stephen Curry has my vote but I'm biased as a Dubs fan. However, they finished with a respectable 39-33 record (and were 38-26 when Curry played). Wiggins was the second option, and while not bad, wasn't as reliable as Jamal Murray OR Michael Porter. Joker had one hell of a season but he had two legit second/third options (equally could've been the number one or two options on many other teams, Warriors included). The Nuggets had years of playing with the same players so there's years of chemistry already built-in whereas the Warriors haven't had the same privilege (many new faces this year, Curry was basically out all of last year, etc).

Once again, I'm biased but I think Curry was more valuable to his team than Joker was to his. And in no way am I saying Joker wasn't valuable, I'm just thinking the Warriors needed Curry more than the Nuggets needed Joker (to succeed).

As much as I love Steph and probably the best player on the planet right now. This is Joker's MVP to lose.

MVP: Jokic
DPOY: Ben Simmons

If we really stick to being the Most "Valuable", Curry deserves this award. Imagine removing him from this warriors team, they'll be bottom 4 for sure.

Jokic. Brilliant adaptive player. Rock solid all year long.

Curry was the MVP of the end months of the season, but he was literally less valuable when the Warriors were playing with guys with less awareness of how to let Curry's presence make everything easier for you. Some of the shift was due to players getting better at this over the course of the year with mentoring from Curry, Draymond, Looney and Kerr's coaching staff, some of it was due to the worst offenders who had been getting big minutes previously, getting injured.

Beyond those two, the guy no one wants to acknowledge is Gobert. I think we all think Gobert's better in the RS than in the playoffs, but the MVP is a RS award.

Steph is the flavor of the day. Jokic was measurably better in every way this season

I've been saying Steph for a while now with what they did this season. But, I do think Jokic deserves it. I really hope he takes it, because I don't know if he will have another season quite like this one.

1. Jokic
2. Embiid
3. Steph

All very strong candidates for different reasons, but Jokic was a workhorse once again and missed zero games. His peak output doesn’t match Embiid or Steph, but he was really really good all season long. The only knock against him is his defense, but his durability, offensive output, efficiency, clutch play, and managing to finish in the top half of the West and holding up after Murray went down are all major positives for Jokic.

I do think there’s a valid case for either Embiid and Steph, but only one guy can win the award, and I don’t think there’s much doubt that it’s Jokic this season.

DPOY is Simmons. He was tasked with guarding the other team’s best on a regular basis and can defend anywhere on the floor. He shut down just about everyone. Add in that he’s a momentum changing type playmaker on defense and it seals the deal. Draymond and Gobert both solid choices, but again, there can only be one.

Agree with this.

I believe the lowest seed to ever win the award was a six seed. That guy led the NBA in scoring while also being the first to average a triple double since Oscar (at the time, a big deal). He also played 81 of 82 games.

Not saying what is right or wrong. Merely noting that in the history of the award there is a bar and lowering it to a player who may miss the playoffs all together would be an enormous change. If the award just went to the NBA scoring leader, MJ would have 10. He doesn't, so what are we doing here?

Who said Steph was included just because he was the scoring leader?

2019-20 Warriors went 15-50, dead last by four games.
2020-21 Warriors went 39-33.

The only noteworthy difference is Steph.

I think a strong case can be made for Giannis as a finalist over Steph, but to act like Steph and Bradley Beal would be interchangeable based on who won the scoring title is asinine. His value is far greater than just scoring buckets.

What would the Mavs record be without Luka? What would the Blazers record be without Dame?

NBA just needed a reason for people to be interested.

Jokic, Embiid, Giannis would have been too boring.

One could argue Steph over Luka/Chris Paul sure. Personally I had Steph at 6 but I wasn't able to watch a lot the last week so I know I missed a great stretch.

This

Steph's late bump was prompted by extraordinary play but even more media hype. Much like Giannis's absence can be attributed to media fatigue. The award is nice but, to this date, has no true definition.

MVP - Jokic. You could make a strong case for Steph though as he lead the league in RPM. His defensive contribution was not enough and he missed some game though.

DPOY - Gobert.

To say Curry doesnt belong in this conversation is just hatred.

Jokic deserves it. No doubt. Embiid had a great year too.

But Steph is lugging Jordan Poole Kent Bazemore and Andrew Wiggins on an every night basis and has made a 39-33 team as must see TV each night.

I hope Steph gets it.

The fact that the 2nd best player this season isn't even a finalist makes it a joke
