Default Non-RC cards that are more iconic/expensive than rookie card

Are there non-rookie cards of a player that are considered more "iconic" than their rookie card? I imagine that this is quite subjective but I am very curious if there are examples.

On a more objective note, are there non-rookie cards of a player that are actually more expensive than their rookie card?

Thank you!

52T Mantle is the classic example.

The ones that popped immediately to mind are close to rookie prices, but normally just a tad lower depending on day and grade.
Bo Jackson 1990 Score
Dale Murphy Reverse Negative
I'd also bet a few 1993 Finest players have that card valued higher than their rc.

It depends....are you only talking about regular issue cards?

I'd note that the 1968 Clemente 3D is considered a highly desirable and valuable card, but it's a test issue.

Isn't the 92 Bowman Chipper and even 93 SP Chipper typically worth more than Chipper's 91 Base RC's?

1992 Bowman Pedro Martinez, since his 1991 Upper Deck Final Edition was printed to the masses.

That gets impossible to discern in the modern era, with parallels and autographs and SP variations complicating the picture.

For instance, Juan Soto’s 2019 Topps Chrome Sapphire sells for more than his 2018 Topps Chrome Update. But the 2018 TCU refractor (and other, more rare parallels) is worth more than the Sapphire.

But purely in terms of base cards, the ‘19 Sapphire is a stronger card than the ‘18 TCU.

There aren’t a whole lot of clear-cut examples in the modern era, though, that would be akin to the Mantle ‘52 Topps.

There are some ‘92 Bowman cards that I’d rather have than a cheap ‘91 base card. Pedro Martinez, Chipper Jones and Jim Thome come to mind.

While I don’t collect football anymore, the Brett Favre ‘92 Stadium Club was a bigger deal than the ‘91 Stadium Club (but I don’t know if it still is).

Bowman Color or 52T Reese?

71 Blue and Buckner, maybe

52T Campanella

Basically every player that had a RC in the 90s. Mirror Golds, Red Crusades, PMGs, 24kt's, etc are almost all more iconic and expensive than RCs of those same players.

Pretty sure the question can be limited to base cards, not errors/variations/parallels.

I do like though that 91 UD is like his ONLY mainstream rookie card. That’s a unique scenario since forever

Honus Wagner's iconic T206 card is not his actual "RC." As far as I know there is at least one other card of him (I'm thinking the 1902-11 W600 Sporting Life) which precedes that one.

52 Mantle has been mentioned, but dare I say also 52 Mays is more iconic, or comparably iconic, to the 51 Bowman. Damn, horizontals.

McGwire’s Team USA card? Dunno how those shook out over time or what people consider the ever slippery “true rookie card.” But any time someone wants to show their precious junk wax collection, that’s the first card pulled out.

I came here to say these three specifically. Obviously others think the same!

I think the ‘52 Topps Mays also might be higher than the ‘51 Bowman, but that one is a lot closer than the Mantle.

90 Leaf 2nd year cards of certain 89 rookies were more expensive back then. Not sure that is the case anymore.

I think Reggie Jackson's 1990 UD auto card is more iconic than his rookie.
