Default 2021 Topps Chrome Update Hobby Boxes?

Given that Kelenic (and other big time rookies) didn't make it into Series 2, and their status for 2021 Chrome feels murky, are we going to see Topps Chrome Update Hobby Boxes this year? Don't want to give Topps any ideas, but are their chrome rookies really going to limited to the 8 pack blasters?

Topps can fill up boxes with poodle farts and TCU will still sell out without a problem (see: 2020 TCU). Kelenic has 2022 stamped right across his forehead.

Although, I admit, the production of his On Demand material with the RC logo makes me think they may throw us a bone for Update.

So, basically, as I've explained in my two previous comments, I know absolutely nothing and shouldn't be allowed to post on this board.

What are the other big time rookies!?!??? As far as I'm concerned, this whole year's rookie class rates 5 snoozes out of 5.

Wake me up when it's the 2022 rookie class and we can chase Wander, Adley and possibly some other huge youngsters.

Arthur, I notice an inordinate number of animals around you seem to have gastrointestinal issues!

Going into 2021, this rookie class was getting all kinds of hype.

Let's just be honest, no rookie will ever live up to expectations.

Wander, Adley and such have nowhere to go but down after release, just like the 2021 class did since hype pricing is always > production pricing.

In June of 2022, if Wander is hitting .280 with 7 homers, people will have moved on from him as well.

I think, for the most part, you're correct and the safe money is on a post-hype reality check. But we recently had two years where the rookies coming in (Acuna, Soto, Tatis, Alonso) exceeded the hype right away and so, of course, the thinking now is "Who's going to be the next ____ ?"

Ya but collecting guys like Wander and Adley have a lot more potential for long term value (Acuna, Vlad, Tatis, Soto) than anyone in this year's rookie class.

Kelenic will be a rookie in update. He already has a Topps Now and Project 70 rookie card. That indicates he will have his RC this year and not next. He will not have RC cards in two different years of products.

Stupid question: IS there going to be Topps Chrome update for 2021? I don't see anything for it on the release schedule.

TCU is a Target exclusive and is not on the normal hobby release schedule. We will not know until we start to see boxes in stores or on the secondary market. Can't see why Topps would not print TCU this year.

Kelenic is in Topps Update and there is no reason he won't be in Chrome Update as well.

Ahh. Thanks I didn't realize it was Target retail exclusive.

Man I remember when the 2001 (Rookies and Traded?) Update Chrome boxes came out in hobby. The first time with the 2 chromes per pack I believe. That product was such a blast to open. Chances at retrofractors and flagship golds. Pujols, Ichiro, and the Pujols/Ichiro card plus others I coveted like Blalock, Hafner and Guzman.

Preach brother. A 6-6 power hitting 16yo shortstop signed for a then LAD record 2m+ bonus. By 2004 I had well over a dozen Guzman retros. He did very well in the Cal league w like 25 hr and 11 3b at age 20. Thought I was gonna be rich for a minute.
Zero MLB HRs in his career.

Who is this Guzman you speak of? I was graduating high school and starting college in 2001. I was completely out of cards until I started dipping my toes back in around 2005.

Joel Guzman if my memory serves correctly?

Is this why I am inexplicably excited about the new 6'7" SS in the league (Cruz in Pittsburgh)?

Exactly. Although every rookie class from every year gets all kinds of hype. It’s absolutely necessary for the “short-term investors” (didn’t want to say “flippers” again… oops)

Indeed. I mentioned it to some folks who were discussing Cruz once and vowed to never bring him up again. He’s literally the same prospect minus the accident and some of the strike zone awareness.

One thing to add to this. I think now, in 2021, it's important to make the distinction that it's a product that only excel vendors stock. With the changes at Target and even Walmart to an extent, we've seen that products that used to be "exclusive" to Target and Walmart really mean it's exclusive to either Excel or MJ Holding.

Off the top of my head, this is all I can think of for who stocks what:

Excel:
Target
Barnes & Noble

MJ Holding:
Walmart
Meijer

Feel free to add other stores to this list that I have forgotten.

You can add Walgreens and Cracker Barrell to the Excell list. Also, the Japan Topps site carries the Bowman Megas and Fire so that is kind of out of the norm for the exclusive.

Don't suppose anyone's seen or heard anything about TCU lately? Maybe they'll be as extremely late in the year as last year's? (Or was it actually earlier this year that the 2020s dropped??)
