As the title says, if you had $1 million to invest now in sports cards, how would you go about it. Let's do a hypothetical $1 million portfolio and track the ROI.
Here is my hypothetical portfolio- 1. Jordan 1997 PMG Red NM-MT or Messi 2004 Mega Cracks PSA 10 (~$350K) 2. Lebron 2003 Ultimate Auto/250 PSA 10 (~300K) 3. Brady 2000 Champ Ticket BGS 7/10 (~350K)

I think I would buy an assortment of sealed wax boxes and cases of iconic sets:
- 2003/04 Exquisite (or any Exquisite really) - 2012 Prizm Hobby - 1996 Topps Chrome (2003/04 too) - 1986 Fleer - 1993 Finest - 1996 or 1997 E-X - 1997 Metal Whatever I could find for one million! While sports cards are a very risky investment, sealed wax (of rare, iconic sets) is about as safe as you can get if you. I feel like in this era where everyone is obsessed with posting content, these rare boxes will continued to be opened as a spectacle. They can only gain rarity with time. |

I would wait until prices softened up, doesn’t make sense to buy at near all time highs.

I agree with ray34allen21, I'd probably mix sealed a good amount of wax into the portfolio.

I thought maybe I'd add one of the 10 that was trimmed on a discount.
![]() I remember reading (on Beckett I think) about one that made it through eBay for $350,000? You are correct, in 2021 it'd have to be a Red I suppose. Last edited by Somuchjunkwax; 07-19-2021 at 11:47 AM. |

97 mj jambas
97 mj red pmg 97 mj ultra stars gold 03 Bron Credentials 03 Bron Ultimate Collection Auto I don't know the exquisites market at all but would learn and invest in that area as well; Bron/MJ. Brady and Messi make sense but I don't follow those sports too closely. I still prefer betting on MJ out of all the players because I think his position as a global icon will continue to resonate the most generation after generation.

Not in any order or any type of grade but I would get these cards as my portfolio w/ $1million.
-Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie (GOAT of bball) -OPC Wayne Gretzky Rookie (GOAT of hockey) -Nat'l Treasures Stephen Curry /99 RAP (changed the game of bball and still has a good resume of accolades) -Lebron SPA OR ULTIMATE RC (gotta have a lebron in anyone's portfolio) -1952 Topps Mantle (iconic vintage) -Contenders Tom Brady RC Auto (GOAT among Football) -Bowman Chrome Ref Albert Pujols RC Auto (iconic in its own right) then diversify some soccer in which I'm not too familiar on who to buy. Oh yeah, get Ohtani as well since he's a generational player since Babe Ruth. |

Funny... I'd go much different than what anyone else here has done:
I would focus cards mostly in the range of $3,000-$30,000 that are all: -Very low pop -Recognizable cards -Have potential to 3,4, or 5 x if things go right. Even bigger if things to perfectly. Prizm Golds, 1/1s (Nebula and Black), BGS Black Labels and low Pop 10s, Rare/Early Panini inserts and parallels in high grade, Early Prizm Silver in high grade. The one exception I might make is if I could pull a significant rookie year 1/1 from any key guy across basektball or football and go over my $30k/card budget. Regardless, the name of the game for me is to accumulate stuff that can never flood the market so that I can still control it to a degree.

I like that nobody is actually building a $1M portfolio.

1. 1989 Cao Muflon Yugoslavian Michael Jordan
2. 2003-04 UD Glass One-Two Combo Michael Jordan, LeBron James Dual Autograph Jersey #/10 (although any dual auto would suffice) 3. Ohtani rookie card signed in Kanji (preferably #22 blue bowman pitching card if budget allowed) |

I have one thing on someone's list
![]() The one i see that hurts the most is the Brady contenders. ![]() I was right about that card and didn't take my own advice. Back when i made that thread several years ago in the football section UD SP Authentic was his #1 card to have according to everyone else in the sports card world including online articles. It never made sense to me and it was obvious his only NFL autographed RC should be ranked higher. I would have well over a million in Brady's right now. Probably my SGC 98 alone would be worth that or close to it.... if i kept it. Oh well |
