Default Last years huge card BOOM. Officially Over?

Most cards seem to have given back most, if not all, of the gains. 3 questions

1) Is it Over? (the Boom)

2) Will we ever see another run like that again?

3) Is the correction over?

I don’t think it’s over. As governments continue to print money like it’s going out of style, people turn to hard assets. I think cards fall under that category of investment and won’t go away anytime soon. So while we had a correction, I think it’s a temporary one.

Is the boom over for quality graded players, limited numbered cards? Nope.

is the boom over for common, over produced releases? I think it's getting there.

Card prices are not even close to where they were in 2019. Maybe base is getting closer, but not the better stuff.

Also, baseball is almost over. Prices always get soft for baseball in the fall.

Wax prices come down to match how much card prices have dropped in the last year, there is a chance we see a rebound. Retail getting marked up hurt IMO and hobby prices are out of control considering how soft the market is right now.

Investing in sports cards right now is like buying Bitcoin back in 2010. We have gone up from last year but there are still incredible growth opportunities in this asset class. Prices may fluctuate somewhat in the very short term, but the long-term chart leads nowhere but up for the next 8-10 years. There is no slowdown in sight until 2030 at earliest.

I'd say a combination of baseball offseason and people in general getting out more (spending more on non-cards) has brought us to the current lows, but preseason should be great as always.

I'm not sure about other sports, but my small circle is focusing heavily on vacations/holidays etc. and I figure that's a common sentiment worldwide.

My belief….

eBay’s new “graded card” algorithm has destroyed the raw card sales….
Good luck selling raw unless your store is loaded with back listings-that already had/has watchers.

At least for baseball, I think there will be continued uncertainty until a labor agreement is reach, if it is reached before a lockout. Some people may shrug if it goes past December 1st as expected, but if it drags into 2022 and Spring Training, could see some real issues in normally frothy pre-season market.

I got to believe with the Wander RC coming out everyone will rush to buy the next gold wave shimmer opening day refractor special numbered and limited to a few. I mean there has
got to be an unlimited number of those limited crap.....err...I mean cards that everyone
can invest for the long term, say a couple months. Cards to cherish. Then don't forget
you will have the option to buy the legible autos too.

The 2021 rookie class did not help anything.

The lcs in my area are pricing 2021 chrome like we are right in the middle of last years boom, only problem is there are no marquee rookies to go after, with the huge price increase and not so sought after rookies its hard to imagine the draw continues.

None of my raws are selling, and I'm not in it for profit. Rarely get more than 1 view. When you can buy a slabbed version for 8-12 dollars i dont blame people for not showing interest.

Quick search just now for slabs sold under 20 bucks.

Its as if the slab is worth more without an actual card in it lol.

Can't say many of you didn't see this coming, the winners are psa and breakers. Everyone else lost in the boom.

Yes it’s a dip from where we were a year ago but it’s a massive increase from 2020. If you bought at peak you are down but there are still lots of cards that are at higher valuations when pulled now than they would have been in 2019. Market is pretty robust. We have not seen the eBay search issue be a problem for us.

We’ve had three new brick and mortar card shops open in the area just this year. I don’t count the flea market stalls and numerous retail-only flippers who won’t last. That hasn’t happened in decades. Stores were only closing. So, I’m happy for that, as I welcome more availabilty and interest in my hobby.

I’m glad the market correction is seemingly starting to happen, also. It still needs to come down on wax a lot, but the backlash is evident. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to pay these inflated prices to open any hobby wax right now. The collector and even the flipper needs to have a reasonable chance at getting value-for-money when they open something. It can’t be 100% just a lottery where you’re gonna lose 99% of the time.

It’s over.

At some point in time, people will be forced to go back to work.

You can’t live on dogecoin and retail blaster profitz forever.

And it’s rough trying to buy hobby topps chrome boxes at minimum wage.

Oh yeah, and lockout will be the knockout punch.

Baseball will die off particularly if the astros win the World Series.

Because I don’t own “iconic, generational” talent I haven’t been affected nearly as much as others either way. Play good, cards go up. Play bad, cards go down. Same as it ever was.

Except for fatty and ohtani, this year it was more play good, go down, because of the “pullback”.
