Default Old psa certs

Anyone noticed old certs graded cards are in bad shape? I recently purchased a first edition Mewtwo base set psa 8 with a low cert of 2xxxxx and man that thing was like a 6. Scratches all over the Holo, some kind of dot on one of the borders. Edging was pretty bad did they use to grade like super lenient? I realize now I should just go for newer certs because it looks like they grade much harsher now. Anyone else feel the same?

Yes - believe or not Beckett graded harder than PSA in the past. Now PSA is strict. I only buy newer PSA certs personally.

That is a very common complaint. There are many old 7s that would get 5s now. Way back when, they also barely considered centering. Some of the PSA 9 T206 cards are like 75/25.

5-6 years ago many people on this board claimed PSA used to grade harder 10–15 years before then.

WOTC Pokemon cards graded pre-2019 or so are definitely going to be, on average, 1-2 grades off from what you would see if the card was submitted today. I've submitted roughly 6000 pokemon cards a year since 2017, and I know with certainty that a vast majority of the cards that graded a 10 from years past would probably snag an 8 or a 9 today.

This is particularly true with WOTC holos, where I used to be able to hit 20-30% 10s by just giving the card a 10 second once-over, but it's also true for non-holos since they're much stricter about wear on the backs than they were before.

I tend to look for certs after the covid shutdown when possible. I believe we decided roughly 47x were the certs that started coming out after the shutdown last year. Also believe ther has been an inflection after Nat took over, not as clear on those numbers.
