I understand Topps makes decisions from time to time to hold back RCs until the following year in order to increase sales and popularity.
But, unless I'm wrong, Panini doesn't have to use the same logic. It seems to me that Panini could've made a fortune if they would've included Wander Franco in their 2021 product, especially since Franco was ACTUALLY a rookie this year. Am I wrong? Thoughts? |

It’s controlled by the MLBPA.

Wow! I didn't know that. That seems strange. Do player associations of the other major sports leagues do the same thing?

Not sure. It goes back to when the prospect/rookie card situation was so out of whack about 20 years ago that baseball itself had to step in. I’m not totally sure if Panini is bound by those rules, but Topps is, and it makes financial sense for Panini to follow along.

Possibly. My thinking would be to wait until people are in a mad feeding frenzy trying to get Topps ‘22, and if/when they can’t find it, have alternative products ready for consumers. Releasing it now would just have people on here saying, “Eh, I’m waiting for his real rookie card.” Just my thoughts though. There’s definitely something to be said for being first-to-market though.

I would imagine Topps's deal with the PA has language that stops them from having other deals where those secondary manufacturers can release rookie cards in advance of Topps's own - be it either Topps's decision or the PA's on the timing. Seems only logical as a means to protect themselves as the senior partner in the card space (until Fanatics takes over, obviously.)

Tangential question - does the Topps “Rookie Cup” even have rules any more? I saw it was on a Topps Now - “Call Up” card. Which was before Wander had even played a game. The Cup used to be given by Topps to the best Rookie at each position - after they had demonstrated their best-ness on the field of play - i.e. on the next year’s cards. Wander has a Rookie Cup card before his RC even.
I bought one blaster of Update the other day. I pulled so many old designs from it I forgot which ones came from the Archives blaster purchased simultaneously. Topps increasingly gives me a vibe that they are just running on fumes now. |

As far as specific rules for it, I’m not sure if there’s anything written in stone. It’s just a matter of what products are released after the team is announced. |

The Topps Rookie Cup is purely a simple Topps creation and I’m sure there are no rules or contract language about it. Just, tradition. Which Topps basically threw out the window on this, with their basic desire to somehow attach the word “Rookie” to every single baseball card they can.

I picked up a Estevan TC auto for $7! I’m a fan of the guy. His debut was in the 2020 season, so I’m assuming that’s why he made the cut.

They were too busy making a second year's worth of Randy Arozarena rookie cards... same team... that's a lot to ask of the "experts" over at Panini...
Or, something along those lines! |
