Hey guys, if you had 10k to spend on 1 basketball RC, which would it be? (PRE 2010 cards only. I don't collect the new stuff)
Ive been saving up and selling some lower end stuff in order to consolidate in a sense with 1 big card purchase. Your comments and opinions are appreciated. Last edited by bryan2points; 01-19-2022 at 01:10 PM. |

Totally biased here as a vintage collector, but I would target the best looking graded George Mikan, Wilt or Russell rookie I could find for $10K. Since none of these guys are likely to pad their stats any further or get embroiled in major controversy at this point, they are safe and along with the 1986 Fleer Jordan, constitute four of the most iconic cards in the hobby, so they should stand the test of time. I would go graded, because I trust the grading companies over my own ability to weed out fakes/altered cards (if you are an expert on such things, perhaps this step is unnecessary).

You into vintage or modern? Who do YOU like?
Buy the best card from the best set, of said player. I’d personally go Luka, all day. Plenty of nice cards in that price range |

In no specific order: Allen Iverson Credentials, Tim Duncan Row 0, Lebron Topps Chrome PSA 10 / not sure if a refractor would get below $10k even at bad grades but that if so, Kevin Durant Topps Chrome Refractor

In general, a $5k card makes me equally as happy as a $10k card. So rather than one $10k, I'd go with two solid $5k options. Probably a mix of Fleer MJ RC and a low numbered LeBron, KD, or Curry. For cards after 2010.. Giannis/Luka RPA or numbered Prizm.

#1 - I'd still go MJ - 1986 Fleer PSA 8, should have 2k or so left over for something else nice.
#2 - 1961 Fleer Wilt, target a PSA 6, but might have to drop down to a PSA 5. |

Ngl, I think the most important thing to focus on with that budget is purchasing a card RAW but in good condition. While buying graded does give you some assurance about the quality of the card, it also makes you pay a massive premium. I'd assess the condition myself and if I think the card can get an 8-10 (applicable to the more recent stuff- LBJ+Curry from the list), I'd buy it. For the more Vintage Stuff, you can be more lenient and target stuff in the 5-8 Range
Players to Target: 1. Curry (Preferably a Bold RC Auto) 2. LeBron (Serial #'d RC or RC Auto such as SP Authentic or UD Glass) 3. '69 Topps Lew Alcindor (Buy a copy and send it to https://shop.kareemabduljabbar.com/p...wn-memorabilia. You can have Kareem inscribe the card with 6 different inscriptions, and own a video of him literally signing your EXACT card. Choosing this option would be super safe, and you would still have some rolling change. 4. '61 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain 5. Larry/Magic/Erving Triple RC (Probably search for a signed copy of this card) |

If it were me, I would break that down into two iconic cards:
1986 Fleer Michael Jordan PSA 7 1980 Topps Magic/Bird/Dr.J PSA 8 It looks like both cards are in the $5,000-$5,500 range, so you may be stretching that budget. |

If it were me, I'd probably go with a nice LeBron or Jordan patch-auto (it wouldn't be a rookie, though).
For a rookie, I saw that a Lebron Finest Refractor /250 PSA 8 sold for $10k in November. I love that card. |

Yep those are the four key targets for sure. Some top Curry cards, including rookies, are still undervalued with lots of room to go up.

IF you want a sure thing, I would invest in Giannis.
If this guy wins a 2nd title at age 27, the sky is the limit for his stuff. You can find rookie autographs in gem mint condition for $2-3000 yet. I like both Joel Embiid and Devin Booker for underrated lower budget picks. The Suns should be favorites to win it all and Embiid is rising in the MVP race.
