Yelich for sure. I just liked the kid and thought there was room for some all star appearances/maybe a batting title. Began hoarding his stuff ocd style. I think my old Instagram is still up, @yelichrookies. That was at about the half-way point. Topps chrome blue autos for $12-$13 a piece… golds for $30-40… at one point owned 13 of his black update rc’s.

Sold most way too early for a nice profit, but held onto a chunk for a massive profit.

My best investments were 17 and 15 years ago when my kids were born. My wife bought me a 1933 Goudey Ruth #144 in a PSA 5 holder and a T206 Cobb Bat Off in PSA 4. I should have had a third kid, as a Cracker Jack Shoeless Joe was next up on the wish list. (sigh) I think she paid around $2500 for each. I assumed they were holding their value, but was quite surprised at the appreciation last year when I became more involved in the hobby. Sometimes the tortoise wins the race.

I have about 100 Brady rookies (multiple copies of some). I bought them back in '02 and '03. Some I picked up before his first Superbowl, some after. For me, it was not so much that I knew he would be great, it was more for sentimental reasons. I went to U of M during the same years as Tom, 96 - 2000, so I saw him play his last two years and actually even met him a few times....he was a friend of a friend of a friend . I have 3 Bowman Chrome rookies....Ionix, UD Pros & Prospects, EX, and many others. I think the most I paid for one was around $250. The Bowman Chromes I picked up for between $80 and $125. I still have the prices I paid for them on the top loaders in sharpie. It's crazy how much these cards appreciated. I don't ever plan to sell them but definitely in awe how that investment panned out. Always thought my Charles Woodson rookies would be worth more And my Griese rookies have truly only sentimental value

Baseball wise, I have some odd minor league/international league cards that I bought for nothing, like the Ripken Charlotte O's Police card. I bought a whole box for like $10. I just thought that they were neat. It also had the Barkley JMS card. It was at a yard sale and the parents said their son grew out of them

I have had plenty of singles that have appreciated greatly such as a 2011 topps update trout BGS 9.5 I purchased for $40 and crossed it to a PSA 10 for $20.
But I think the best investment I made was stashing away boxes of sealed product starting when my son was born in 2016. I bought 2016-2020 boxes of Bowman Draft for around $150 a piece. Then I stashed away blasters from Target to the tune of about 100 different ones, 2018 topps update, 2019 topps chrome, 2018 topps chrome, etc.

On a side note I started about 5 years ago buying 2 key graded comic books a year with my work bonus, comics take up quite a bit more room than cards do, especially graded ones so I wanted to only buy good ones. I got in for pretty cheap on comics such as Iron Man #1, Captain America #100 (which is really his #1), Star Wars #1, etc. these have all appreciated well as well.

The original intent was to store them and then open them when he was a bit older to have the fun of pulling some good rookies. But now that prices are really high I am not sure what the plan will be like in 5 years from now. Maybe sell a little and open a little.

Well, not really my best investment in sports cards but maybe the best baseball investment and definitely the one with the most history/sentimental value........

Not buying the high school graduation ring and use the money for a card.

Everyone in my school were hype about buying the dumb ring. I really never understand it . My mother knew i never liked rings on my finger and she gave me $600 cash instead of the ring.
So i took the $600 + $280 saved and bought a SP Legendary Cuts Roberto Clemente Auto 1/1 for $880

Long story short... Half the class lost the rings due to a hotel robbery in a trip to Cancun, some were lost at the beach trip and others dont even remember where they left them. But i still have the card

A friend told me that the card its worth around $3900-8000. So that's cool

I did not actually purchase them, but many many many years ago, a person in my old neighborhood tossed two boxes of comics....left them on their lawn with a "free to take" sign. I was really into comics at the time, I think more so than cards, this was in the late 80s/early 90s, when comic books were sort of down, before Image came on the scene and brought younger generation of collectors into the fold....

Anyway, the boxes had nothing but golden and silver age comics....There were the first three issues of hulk.....the original...from the early 60s....a bunch of the early fantastic four books, X-men, Avengers, Strange Tales.....some early Mad Comics...I was blown away. I hauled it to our house.....went to my local store bought backs, bags, carefully put them one by one in bags.....

I had them stored in my closet.....that summer, Houston had a massive flood...and the whole house got flooded.....my baseball cards were on the top in my closet but the comic book boxes were on the ground since they were heavy....long story short....my two boxes of valuable comics turned into pulp.....completely disintegrated.....the water got into the plastic bags....they were completed submerged....for several days....before the water receded....

pains to just think about it.....there is a copy of the first issue of Hulk on Ebay listed for $300,000. The comics were not in the cleanest of shape when I think back...but still

I bought a Jordan rookie (PSA 8.5) and then a gorgeous looking raw Jordan sticker rookie for $1,500 combined from the same guy.

Vladdy. Bought early and bought hard. Sold his cards to buy more and now I’m just waiting for the encore performance.

94' UD Griffey-Mantle Auto's.

Chased down my second set in 2019 and after seeing recent sales, glad I did before prices got silly.

I've gotten pretty lucky in baseball a few times with specific player collections but nothing compares to football when it comes to homeruns.

I bought and still own a 2017 Panini Prizm Patrick Mahomes Silver PSA 10 that I bought raw from my LCS for $50 and had graded in a bulk submission for $10.

If it came down to just one card that I did really well, I would say buying my 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 1 back in 2018.

If it came down to buying a player, I’d say buying all my 2009 & 2011 Mike Trout cards back in 2016 for a fraction of what they’re worth today.

It might be a little early to tell right now, but I’d also say buying all of my 2018 Juan Soto rookie cards when they came out. Right after Soto’s MLB debut, I bought his 2016 Bowman Chrome Auto & International Inks Auto and I’ve been hooked ever since.
