Surprising Items You've Found At Retail

Has there ever been anything you're shocked to find on the shelf while at Walmart, Target, Meijer, etc.? Box of 2018 Topps Update in 2020 or something similar?

Not much, but I was shocked to find 6 packs of Ultra Pro 35 count toploaders on the shelf at Walmart this morning.

Last year I found those MJ Holdings two-pack repack things with 2019 Chrome inside at Walmart.

I found retail hangers of 2002 Bowman Draft at Big-5 sporting goods about seven years after the product came out.

I also found 18 hanger packs of 2007 Donruss Signature Edition at K-Mart around 2012. Nabbed them all. Each hanger pack had one pack plus a half inch thick screw down. Kevin Brown /100, Will Clark /1000 and base auto Vlad Guerrero were the highlights.

Years ago there was a salvage center store here that got in a shipment from some store and amongst the cases of 1990 Topps and Donruss had a box of 1993 Finest (this was around 2000 or so). Crazy find even then. I didn't get it as they did a lottery for line position (eerily like retail a while back). It was pretty banged up as I remember it though.

Also found a couple 2019 Topps series 1 Walgreens hangers not too long ago randomly at my local one (Soto and Kyle Tucker Yellows).

1996 Topps Chrome Basketball at my local Walmart in 1997. I passed on it and bought a Scoreboard box or some dumb sh*t like that.

found a fat pack of 2018 topps update on clearance at an out of the way walmart in the summer of 2020. turns out there wasn't a single update card in the whole pack. just a bunch of series 1 and 2 commons. guess it had been resealed.

I want to say it was 2017, but found some 2012 Topps Update at a Wal-Mart.

I found 2011 topps update hanger box late in 2012 at a K-Mart and pulled a Trout. Had it graded and came back a BGS 10. I also remember finding the 1997-98 Masters Golf set at a K-Mart a couple of years pasts it’s release for like $11.99.

Found a hanger pack of 2011 Topps Update at the local KMart on clearance shortly before it closed in 2017.

I opened it. Saw the cognac Parallel of an Angels rookie, when I opened it and my heart for an instant skipped a beat. However it ended up being the wrong angels rookie- it was Trumbo

About a year ago, the Dollar Tree about a mile from my house had evidently swept under the shelves the separate the different cash register lanes for the first time in years. There were two large hand carry baskets there by where the cards might usually be found. In it was 85% old bubble gum and candy but buried in there were about 12 packs of cards from I would guess maybe 2009 through 2017. Various sports and series.

They would not let me buy them. They took them from me at the register and refused to let me buy them or have them or anything. I assumed they would throw them away so I actually checked their dumpster the next few nights.

Never found those, but to my surprise they did throw away about 3 brand new boxes of Fortnite trading cards that I had seen along the area of the cards for months that they had never opened. I am trying to remember. There may have been 150 brand new packs. I grabbed those and opened maybe 3 and sold the rest on eBay for close to $400 I believe it was.

I would have still rather had the other stuff. That's the kinda stuff I dream about finding in a store. I was extremely disappointed and almost wonder if I should have just taken them knowing this was going to be the outcome.

I went into a Walmart one afternoon about 3 years ago before the craziness started and found 2 blasters of 2013-14 Prizm BB (Potential Giannis Rookie Card)

Late 2020 into 2021 I was pretty consistently finding prime packs that had either 2018 Update or 2019 Series 2 at Wal-Greens. I never pulled a Soto/Acuna/Ohtani in ~5 packs of 2018 Update, but I opened several Tatis, Alonso, and 1 NNO Vlad from 2019 packs. I'd say I opened somewhere between a dozen and 20 packs of 2019 S2 from these.

I actually submitted 2 of the Tatis with PSA and hit a 9 & 10 so pretty nice cards for Wal-Greens repacks.

It yielded a Dual Auto/Relic booklet of McGwire and Henderson #/10. It's the only time I've ever pulled a booklet, and I buy tons of A&G every year.

Wow, what a sick hit! Did you keep the Henderson/McGwire?

I actually hit the Ichiro Ultra SP (or SSSP, whatever its called) from 2020 update in one of those. I keep that card on my desk cause the odds of hitting a Ultra SP from a random retail repack have to be so astronomical.

We have two young boys who absolutely love strawberries. Wife asked me to run to Target real quick because we were out of strawberries. I was tired and I was watching something I was into, so I was annoyed. Thankfully we live a mile away from a Target so its a quick trip. Impulsively bought a few loose hangers of 2019 Heritage.

Look what was in there...



Soooooooo many more disappointing trips to get snacks at Target have followed.

I found some 2018 Update fat packs in late 2019 at a Wal-Mart. Pulled a few Acuna's including a gold rookie debut that I sent in to SGC and got a 9.5. I sold all the Othani stuff I pulled early, but I did trade the 2 Gleyber rainbow foils I pulled into a Acuna Topps Chrome PSA 10 when Gleyber stuff was hot.
