Default Zero Cool Cards "Premium trading cards for pop culture, art, and entertainment."

I saw someone mention this on facebook. Not a lot of concrete info known yet. There is already a blowout thread in the baseball section, but it looks like non sports is the correct home for this topic

Will be interesting to see what properties they have lined up for launch.

Looks interesting. Thanks for linking to it. It’s probably NFTs but to the extent they have a cool nonsports phsyical card property… or A-list actor/musician auto I will probably throw some money at the early releases.

It's not Topps, got their email earlier, it's physical card set of Gary Vee's NFTS. Ugh.

I keep forgetting that Fanatics owns Topps so now they’ll advertise non-Topps items via the Topps platform

With that said. I feel dumber for trying to understand and “appreciate”? What’s happening with this… almost understand it less than NFTs

Kind of surprised the first release is a physical product. I was expecting some sort of NFT thing. The set itself reminds me of the old The Art Hustle release… so there will likely be a niche for it.

The Dutch Auction format is also a surprise. I think the last time I encountered it was early eBay. Basically you put in your max bid for a box (of 800 boxes being released in 2 days) and if your price is among the 800 highest… you win the box for the price you committed to. So you can “overpay” potentially if you go large and everyone else stays small.

StockX does that format occasionally (who's co-producing this with Gary Vee). They did it with Bowman X I believe.

Listened to Josh Luber on the Sports Card Nonsense Podcast about this. Granted, I am a middle aged guy, but I dont understand why anyone would spend money on such a niche thing like (poorly) drawn cards by a wine and social media entrepreneur. Gotta give it to the guy, he is a walking talking hype machine, but holy cow does he get people to bite hook line and sinker on projects he is part of. I can understand wanting autographs or cards of actors, writers, artists, musicians. Just cant wrap my head around the Vee Friends thing.

On the upside, Luber did say he saw the benefit of fanatics buying Panini. I think that would be a step in the right direction.

The methodology you are describing is the model Panini uses for its FOTL product. The version Fanatics is using is a true Dutch auction (and most commonly used in the financial markets inc the US Treasury) where everyone pays the same price; in this case the third lowest bid amount placed by all bidders. So if you go high and everyone else goes low, you do not 'overpay'.

Josh Luber has been very critical of the Panini version, so it is interesting to see the approach Fanatics are taking.

I apologize… I guess I was wrong and maybe need to rethink my bid… here is from the FAQ:

“ Unlike a traditional auction where only the highest bidder wins, a blind Dutch auction works by matching the highest bids to the quantity of product available. For example, if we are selling 100 units and each user can only purchase one unit, then the top 100 bids will win, and the lowest bid within the top 100 bids will become the “clearing price” that all 100 bidders would then pay for each of the 100 units sold.”

Yea so you can't "overpay" in theory, however you can certainly pay more than its worth - will be interesting to see how this goes

In theory you’re paying exactly what it’s worth, for the quantity made available.

I ended up bidding $101 for one box… too high? Too low?

At any rate, will be interesting to guess and see how close I get.

I can't even access the website to see what the product looks like. Guess it's getting hit pretty hard.

VF is a blue chip NFT. Gary Vee is a big influencer in the NFT space. These cards will fly!

It will be interesting to see how many of these “micro-sets” they ultimately end up putting out each year. I think I was reading somewhere yesterday in one of the job listings they are shooting for 180 sets but it was unclear if that includes pre-existing Topps output.

Print run of this first release is 1,000 packs of 10 cards (a pack = a box for this one). However, they are holding back 200 for promotional purposes and/or damage replacements… so ultimately only 800 will sell tomorrow. So will be interesting to see what pack price ends up being.

For comparative purposes, Upper Deck releases 999 Marvel Unbound packs each week for $12… so gross sales of $12,000 each week. So we will see what the gross sales end up being for this first zero cool set.

“Blue chip NFT” is an oxymoron. As in it’s oxy for morons.
