I had a feeling they'd go hard after him with losing out on the Nellie sweepstakes and then the Nando news.

Great get for the Pads.

I have a feeling this dude may be an all star level player.
His age, K rate, walk rate, bat skills etc all seem legit to me w/ plus defense and fantastic arm.

Ok… How many Japanese position players have performed at the same level in MLB. My prediction is Suzuki is .280 15 hr guy in MLB at best.

If healthy I'll say .275+ .800+OPS, 20HR+ and very good defense.
If he were to perform at the "same level" as his last couple years in Japan he'd be a top 3 MVP candidate here.
Agree 100% that the recent rate of success hasn't been very good with imported players I just gotta figure that streak may end soon especially as each relative "failure" brings down expectations for the next one and he has all the tools so why not now...

It’s a different brand of baseball and I just don’t think it will ever translate 1:1. They aren’t playing against MLB pitchers and I think the Japanese pitchers tend to be around the strike zone a lot more with less velocity. Tyler Austin, Jefry Marte, Dayan Viciedo, Jerry Sands, Neftali Soto and Domingo Santana were all top 10-20 hitters in Japan last year and I don’t expect to ever see any of those guys in MLB again.

Also it sounds like he hasn’t officially signed with SD or made any decisions yet.

This report in untrue according to Suzuki himself. Padres kind of looking like a clown organization recently. Remember when they leaked the scherzer trade only to see the Dodgers actually close the deal? This would be an embarrassment if it happens again and will make people question the competency of the Padres front office.

Padres need to sign him. Looks like a solid player. It'll also take a lot of the attention away from Tatis Jr. with the Japanese media all over the place. If Suzuki has a hot start, even better.

Right. And Suzuki and his camp are saying that it is untrue, so where did the info come to yahoo Japan from?

The last I saw was that he and his team were meeting with the Cubs tonight. But it is tomorrow in Japan so maybe they know something we don’t.

Still holding out hope he becomes a giant….

Hey, that sounds a lot like what people said about ichiro being a slap hitter with a weird stance

Power is something that rarely translates. Kim from the Padres hit 30 the year before he came over. Fukudome, Shinjo. Kaz Matsui. Even Hideki only hit 30 once, and he had the friendly confines of Yankee Stadium to work with.

I love Ichiro. He was a great player in MLB and fun to watch. But in Japan he was a career .352 hitter with .943 OPS over 9 seasons. In MLB he was a .311 hitter with .757 OPS. So the same applies to him. So you have to be the greatest hitter of all time in Japan to translate over to perinatal all star in MLB.

Ohtani is probably the best case scenario because his numbers in Japan and MLB are almost identical so far but he has a much smaller sample size in both leagues.
