Default Where does Mike Trout stand in the hobby hierarchy right now?

So...was recently able to pick up a #/d Mike Trout card from a recent release for significantly less than an Acuna card from the same insert set/release....and I can't say that I can ever remember Trout not being "king of the hill" in terms of card value (i.e. his cards being the most expensive in any set/release).

Was this a one-off, or have his card values been declining in comparison to some of the younger stars due to his recent injuries?

A couple of weeks of healthy MVP Trout and he'll be back at the top of the mountain

Trout has MLB cards since 2011, and Acuna since 2018. More supply of Trout cards in the market.

Both are coming off injuries, but Trout’s age paired with the number of past injuries has made collectors a little nervous about his continued production moving forward. Nervous buyers = level or decreased demand.

If Trout cards are selling for less than Acuna, then it’s probably the result of increased supply and decreased/level demand of the former

In this case, I was making a direct comparison between a Trout card and a Acuna card from the same #/d insert set (i.e. both have the same number of cards in said set)....so the supply is the same.

Not the supply he was talking about - he meant if you want "a Trout card" there are way more to be had than there are if you want "an Acuna card" - and that obviously holds true even if you narrow it, I want "a numbered /10 [Trout/Acuna] card" or I want "a jersey numbered, color-matched [Trout/Acuna] card" etc. So, yeah, the same number of "2021 Dynasty /10 patch auto" cards but for the people who don't want that very specific set/card combo, Trout supply vastly outnumbers Acuna.

If it’s a recent release, that could be a 2nd or 3 year Card for Acuna, and a 10th-ish year Card for Trout —- 2 different animals

Using Beckett analogies, Trout would still be at the highest base card price in a set.

Trout had a bazillion numbered, 1:1 etc at this point. There might be only one 1:1 or /25 etc in a certain product but every product released in the past 10 years has 1:1 and different numbered cards of Trout so it’s more of a saturated market I’d guess

Already happened.

It was in Anaheim, so no one paid attention.

A better question may be - who will play more games this season - mike trout or Fernando tatis jr?

Hahaha that’s actually a good Q. Would love to see a poll on it.

Trout prices have definitely gone down with his recent injury history and his current age. Its more of a wait and see approach for alot of buyers right now. He will always go down as one of the best players of recent times but now he's turning 31 in 4 months and coming off injury, and his team isn't winning anything any time soon. So those factors are also in play right now. The bigger money in the hobby right now is looking for younger flashier players to "invest" in. That doesn't change Trout's legacy or his counting stats that he is still adding to, but it does slow down his card prices for right now. It also doesn't mean that if he comes out scorching hot and ends up winning another MVP that his prices won't jump again, because we all know that in season production and team success can definitely impact a player's card prices.

Or for that matter, Acuna.

The total # of cards argument that Trout has more cards than Acuna and thus should be less expensive is completely incorrect. If Acuna is going to be any good whatsoever, he will have at least as many cards as Trout - and given historical trends, is likely to have many, many more. Everyone in the hobby already knows this either consciously or subconsciously.

Acuna’s cards are more expensive simply because flippers are always more attracted to the newest shiny objects…and their sheer volume buying and selling of Acuna’s cards simply makes his cards more expensive.

Has nothing to do with anything unless you collect rings.

If I bust a large amount of a product there is one veteran where I can move the base almost instantly and at a price that it doesn’t fee like I’m wasting packing tape and that is Mike Trout. He’s the dollar bill of collecting. His refractors are the five dollar bill.

In the early 90’s I had a friend that carried a binder of Nolan Ryan to shows and card shops. They were “dollars” that evened out trades. Trout is that today. If I see Trout base priced below a buck apiece I pick them from up and then offer them in lots of ten for 9.99. They move real quick on Reddit and eBay.
