This is a pretty sad list. There’s just a 15 year period of a void of meaningful cards.

This is a tough one. Obviously, going forward, the Rickey will probably be the answer due to the price and who he was as a player.

But I voted McGwire. He took pricing to a new level for a base card in 1998. It peaked at $250 for a card that was MASS produced, which was unheard of. And his Tiffany was selling for INSANE prices. The US Olympic photo with a classic pose, sort of reminds me of the 1989 UD Griffey pose.

"Iconic" doesn't equate high $$. For example, the 1986 Canseco is worth all but $50 in PSA 9 but anyone who lived in that era knows that was one of THE cards to get. Canseco was pretty much the main guy in the hobby from 1988-1991.

McGwire USA card gets my vote. It became iconic and almost infamous long after it was printed, and it's a great looking card regardless.

Or the Billy Ripken FF card, for a very non-89 Griffey reason

Even though the Tiffany is more expensive, I wouldn't consider it iconic. The base is what resonated more with people.

The Canseco card drove the hobby into the mainstream. Easy choice.

I agree with those who said Billy Ripken. Plenty of people who have no interest in cards would be able to recognize it. In my mind, that is the definition of iconic.

That Bo should be on the list. I was collecting when that came out - people were going nuts for it.

Don't undersell the 84 Donruss Mattingly. At the time - 86, 87, 88 - he was the most popular player in the sport, and people were clamoring to buy 84 Donruss wherever they could. It had a perceived short print run (especially compared with the 1987-88 stuff) that made people think it didn't exist anywhere. If you wanted it, it was running $300-400/box, which was an unheard of price at a time when that would buy you 7-10 boxes of current year cards.

I traded a whole pile of Ruben Sierra and Eric Davis rookie cards back in 1987 for a box of 1984 Donruss. Dubious at the time, in retrospect a good choice, even if the box had no Mattingly.

This was king in the 1980s

I put it as #2 behind 1989 UD Griffey

Several YouTube videos about this. Many to choose from but the '80 Rickey is right (and knows it)

^Literally never seen this card before. Not even joking. Is it iconic if people have never heard of it?

Regarding the poll, if we're talking iconic at the time, it's Canseco or Mattingly. As I remember it, both were bigger stars than McGwire, who had his true star turn in the late 90s. Sure, I remember the bash brothers and all, but Canseco was the bigger brother, with the 40-40 season and MVP.

If we're talking about which card will best stand the test of time, I'd say it's Rickey.

Most iconic card of the 1980s?

1990 Score Bo Jackson. The math checks out.

I voted '86 Canseco in the poll but it was really a coin flip between it and the '84 Donruss Mattingly. Those were the two "gotta have" cards then that are still easily recognizable now.

I’ve never seen that Auburn Bo. And the ‘90 Score Bo…

I think the most “iconic” question should be answered by those that aren’t in the hobby anymore. People that casually collected or followed the sport back then. We are all jaded at this point. But what card did those people “have to have” back then. I’m going to guess the answer would be the McGwire or the Canseco. Those 2 guys owned the media and the hobby for the 2nd half of the decade.
