Default Ebay Vault is here. Game changer? Will you be using it, do you care?

https://pages.ebay.com/vault/

https://www.ecommercebytes.com/2022/...trading-cards/

I personally think this is going to be a pretty massive deal. Being able to cut down on fees and taxes, having stuff authenticated and stored, and being able to makes deal with instant ownership transfer on the largest card platform out there is huge. The $750+ starting threshold for slabbed cards is pretty high for the average person imo, I don't have tons of stuff I am looking to move in that range but will consider a few things. Once the floodgates open though, the operation is fully running, and any slabbed card is accepted then I think it will be one of the best options to trade in cards you want to move off of to pay for other cards you want more. I much prefer to sell cards to pay for other cards rather than just cash out on something, so this will be a great option for that.

What does everyone else think?

"eBay waives selling fees, including final value fees, for items that are stored in the eBay vault. That means that once you have an item in the eBay vault, you can sell it without paying any sales fees."

Wow, as long as I'm not misreading this then that has to be the most seller-friendly change in the history of the platform. They mention various smaller fulfillment fees in other sections so I'm guessing "without paying ANY sales fees" is a bit misleading, but I'd imagine it's going to be significantly lower than the 13.5% we currently deal with.

I like being able to sell on multiple platforms and trading/selling at shows. Having cards other PC items being stored in a vault is not that appealing to me. However if they run it correctly it is a positive step for eBay going forward.

Hopefully this drives down AH selling fees.

Does this mean that if I ship cards to the eBay vault, and then sell them, I wouldn't have to pay fees (or pay much lower fees)? Or, is this only if you already bought it on eBay? If I could ship cards to the vault I was going to sell on eBay anyway and then pay no fees, seems like a no brainer.

Gotta love the inflated AH fees. They’ve been gouging long enough. “Yes, I just won that for $5k!” Final Invoice: $6700.

I believe I read in another section that if you ship the card to them you'll pay reduced seller fees, but not no seller fees.

The fees tied to this are pretty high. 3% instant transfer fee and withdrawal fees are enormous. Crazy to come into a space after many competitors and charge significantly more.

Well, it would be a step up from the top shelf of the cupboard in the spare room; whilst also negating the need to worry about the two Velociraptors (aka my six and three year old boys)...but where is the fun in that.

The withdrawal fees are what's going to hurt if/when the card leaves the vault.

They are going to be selling fractional ownership of cards in the vault eventually.

From eBay:

"When an item in the eBay vault is sold and the buyer ships it directly to their address, we charge the buyer both the instant transfer fee and the withdrawal fee, as well as an insured shipping fee. But because the instant transfer fee is waived through the end of 2022 and the insured shipping fee is waived through fall 2022, the buyer will currently only pay a withdrawal fee."

Looks like they're pushing a lot of the fees onto the Buyer.

I see that now. I wonder how reduced it is. This would really be the only way I'd use the service, I think.

Maybe the people that should be worried are the consignment services that sell via eBay. I know some people use them because they can send in 50 cards, and the consignor will take photos, list them, ship them each separately, etc., so the owner doesn't have to. But, if eBay will just do that... And, then on eBay, I'm sure you would have a lot more control over when and how the item gets listed, and will most likely get paid quicker than using a consignor.

Yeah this is what I was thinking. Consignment used to be a way to use a 3rd party that had a big following, you put distance between yourself and the buyer, less risk or headache for bad buyers, maybe avoid taxes, and some other reasons. But as you said, if you just send high end stuff to ebay directly, now they authenticate and do everything for you, people no longer really need consignment. It is almost like a higher end COMC.

once the card is in the vault, good luck getting it out of there without giving over your first child.

On COMC I can sell my cards, get credit, and "trade" them for other cards. No taxes involved and as a collector it is the way to go. Only vault I will be using.

Very interesting on the fees part, but Im still old school and like to look at my cards in hand from time to time. But definitely something to think about here.

I am assuming that is not actually how the cards are stored. Looks all very flashy, but someone might want to point out to the marketing team, that even artificial light is not the best thing for autographs!

Any idea what the ongoing Storage Fees are going to be? All I see is that they will be waived throughout the remainder of 2022. Seems like they want to turn this into a self storage locker. You send in your stuff, get a few months free and never get around to emptying it while your credit card gets charged every month on auto pay.

With no details on the fees, you can bet your ass that the fees are more than you want them to be.

That's how pretty much all vaults work I'd assume, PWCC does the same thing.

Yup. This is going to make vaulted cards much less interesting to me.
