I don't know as much about soccer as many of you and I'd like the community's feedback.
I have three 2004 Lionel Messi rookies--2 2004 Mega Cracks #71 (BGS 8 and PSA 6) and 1 2004 Mega Cracks #35 (PSA 8). I'm wondering whether people think I should sell or hold, and why? I acquired them because in my view these cards are relatively low population compared to some of the top names in other sports like Jordan/Lebron, Griffey/Jeter, or Tom Brady. But I don't know enough to say if Messi is in that GOAT category where it's reasonable to expect his cards to consistently appreciate over time. And I also don't know how much demand people expect for soccer cards in general over the next decade. So I'm curious to hear whether you think I should sell or hold these cards--Thanks! |

It's not the demand I would worry about long term but the supply on low / mid grade as the pops are not very representative, you can expect the PSA 3-7 range to continue to swell as more get graded over time from Spain. High grade is more safe as there will be very few of those coming out of collections to the market in that condition.
Low /mid grade have corrected the most so far whilst the upper end is holding up better, the 10 that sold last night wasn't too far off the highs. Personally I wouldn't touch anything below a PSA 8 or 9 on the 71BIS if I cared about resale value (for the PC is a different matter), I'm not a big fan of the Campeon / Campeones card so not the best person to ask.

Agree with Fadster.
Going wider, with all modern, IMO it's not worth the time or effort (unless for PC) if it's under a 9. I won't touch anything raw that's not numbered. Base, unnumbered parallels that aren't SSP will all be envelope filler sooner or later. |

I would hold those cards. Messi might not be on the level of Jordan and Brady in terms of success on the field, but his image and reputation is definitely right there with that list of guys. He's also still playing so he might win another couple with PSG. The advantage he has is that soccer has more fans than any of those sports. The question for me would be, in 10 years when a Messi fan is feeling nostalgic what are they going to buy. Like you I haven't been collecting soccer since those days, but IMO those cards are pretty iconic and there aren't that many Messi RC to choose from. The points about the PSA are valid, but that would be more about maximizing your resale. As a whole I think those cards you have are as safe anything in cards and I would personally hold them if you don't need the money. Full disclosure I don't own any and I'm looking to buy one soon. Messi is like a fine wine and will get better with age.

I’d say 7x Ballon d’ Ors puts him right there with Jordan and Brady. There are many fans in the world who don’t know or even care who Tom Brady is yet they know who Messi is. His international fame may not be as commercial as Jordans was in his prime, but Messi is regarded as the best footballer in the world. The NFL is an exclusive American sport, whereas soccer is a worldwide. For Messi to be named the best soccer player in the world 7 times is remarkable. Aside from Pele he could go very well go down as the greatest soccer player to have ever played. Considering the number of fans who watch his matches versus those who watch basketball or NFL I’d say that’s pretty lofty. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
