Default Las Vegas A’s

(Apologies if this is already in a new thread)

I am sure everyone has heard by now that Manfred has said he doubts the A’s are going to be able to get things done in Oakland, and a move to Las Vegas may be forthcoming.

(On the other hand, this was reported by Bob Nightengale, so who knows if there’s substance to this.)

Just trying to get everyone’s take here. Obviously the existing stadium is not a long-term solution, and from everything I gathered it had been a great stadium until all the additions to accommodate the football team that blew the city off.

My personal thoughts: I think the Oakland city council is trying to shake down the A’s for money, and the A’s are trying to shake down the city. I have no preference here other than to say I want the situation to be resolved - and that as much as it’d be unfortunate to turn your back on 50+ years of history, Vegas is probably a better option.

Also, Manfred wants expansion to 32 teams and can’t do that so long as Vegas is being floated as a relocation candidate, so he wants something done as well.

In this situation Manfred wins either way: he either gets to keep Vegas as a relocation city to threaten other teams to build a new stadium, or he gets a team in Vegas giving the league a footprint there. The eventually wants a team there, it’s just a matter of who and when.

I truly hope that the A's stay in Oakland and i find it ironic that a sport with so many black marks of gambling will have a new home in Vegas potentially

If there was a city that is destined to lose a team it's Oakland.

I will support the A's if they come here. I still think Vegas is getting played as a leverage tool but I'll remain optimistic.

Off topic, ust another reminder that I wish we had baseball here in SA!

On topic, does Vegas have a domed stadium to play in already? I only follow baseball.

True, but in this day and age, you can gamble anywhere now. It doesn’t really matter. Just ask the Atlanta Falcons.

Vegas is overrated. I get the Oakland situation, but there's got to be a better spot for the team than a desert city that's almost out of water.

The NFL and NHL disagree. I don't need to be in Vegas to place a bet on anything.

Between their own population and the in and out rotation of tourists and gamblers, sellouts should be the norm that Oakland hasn't seen in decades.

Vegas would be a horrible location for a baseball team, just like Phoenix is......the heat would require the stadium to be domed & air conditioned, and of course that would be horrible for the environment.

Just contract the A's and Rays and go back to 28 teams in four 7-team divisions.

As much as it would be cool to have games to go see the thought of a domed stadium for baseball in general is just uninspiring to me so I don’t really care one way or another

More of the principal of it, but it is what it is

I go to Vegas 4-5 times a year, being able to see a couple Astros games a year in Vegas would be a dream come true

I guess they finally realized expansion is off the table given the current and future economic climate.
Where will the Rays go?

But you can't support a franchise just based on visiting fans from other cities....

You’re not wrong but it seems like it’s working fine for the Golden Knights (not gonna compare the Raiders)

Tickets sold will never be a problem with casino properties in town but actual attendance will not be great if the team is dreadful, especially after the shine wears off after a few months.

Different situation.....only 41 home games a year, and 17,500 tickets per game.

That's a big difference from 81 homes games and 30,000-40,000 tickets per game.

Hockey = 700,000 tickets per season if every game sells out
Baseball < 2,000,000 tickets a season is considered a disaster

In that case MLB had 12 disasters this year. Tampa-Miami-Oakland were 28-30.

I would be so devastated if the A’s left Oakland

There’s 2.5 million people in Clark County. Filling 40,000 seats, considering the high visitation, wont be an issue. And there’s no Tampa problem where it takes over an hour for some to get to the stadium. Assuming a central location, no where in the valley is more than a 30-40 minute drive, even in rush hour. Most of the population lives even closer than that.

As my retirement looms, and Las Vegas is almost our guaranteed retirement location, I greatly welcome this move. And it makes sense. Baseball is pretty huge in Las Vegas and quite a few big leaguers came from there. The population has pushing increasingly higher. The city has proven it can support major sports franchises and there seems to be a lot of civic pride. Hopefully if they do move the A’s ownership figures out how to spend some of the extra money they’ll earn.

Oakland had lowest attendance in majors this year, less than 10k per game. Seems like the team is not well supported, regardless of the stadium situation.

Too bad, good memories there including seeing McGwire hit his 38th homer his rookie season.
