Being a long time Lions fan, I had to go all the way back to when Detroit wasn’t just good but Elite. Rote was a starter for Green Bay who back in the day put up ridiculous stats for his day. Being a passer / rusher he was the modern day skill set quarterback. In 1956 he went well over 2,000 passing yards in only 11 starts in a era of non passing. He not only was the leader in passing TD’s but was second in the league for rushing touchdowns with 11. The amazing stat is that he held a record that wasn’t broke till L. Tomlinson did so 50 years later.
The reason why I bring up Rote is that most remember Bobby Layne being the QB who in 1957 was the QB started and beat the Browns for the Lions last Championship. Nope, the player who had one of the greatest NFL Title winning games was Tobin Rote. 4 passing TD’s and 1 rushing. That was the last season Detroit was a legitimate Title Team and Rote deserves to be recognized as the QB who had a amazing performance in the Championship game 65 years ago. |
