Question Question about ‘top shelf’ sealed wax….

I am almost without exception, focused on mid-shelf Sealed Wax Products… rarely buy low end base Boxes, and don’t buy $2,000 Boxes with a single 5 Card Pack, either.

My question is, if I were to splurge on one 2022 BB Box to keep sealed long term in the $1,500+ range, what would you suggest? It’s really not my market, so am genuinely curious …. My typical PC Box has about 60 Cards, and is in the $800-ish+ price range.

Default Buy stocks....

Shell or SHEL stock would be a much better buy than ANY new wax or any wax for that matter!

With 2022 wax you'll probably be holding more redemptions than any other year.

Is your goal to piss away $1500+? Look at the prices on BO. Everything $1500+ is guaranteed loser if you rip or hold.

This isn't true across the board at least for now. Not baseball but take FOTL for example still at ridiculous prices while their hobby counterparts are tanking.

Nothing, I repeat nothing, that topps makes high end, especially in 2022, is worth holding long term.

Topps still has never and will never do high-end baseball right. Many of the big hits are redemptions and they can never seem to figure out the super high end market.

Stick with basketball for high end, though panini still has its issues at that price range.

Aren’t your choices really limited with your guidelines?

What products are you looking at?

The print run of ultra modern baseball inherently makes wax investment a poor investment.

In English - I don’t collect all of these - which would you say are top shelf / best of the best regardless of price? I want to try an Uber-High End Topps Product ( if such a beast exists ). Too much vodka last night may have made my initial post not lucid

What do you what to try to do with it? Regardless of the answer I would suspect most profitable line would be akin to pass >>>>> buy in 2 years >>>>>>>>>>>>> buy today

If you don’t care then definitive or diamond icons. Can’t fathom how either would appreciate

Redemptions are the biggest issue. Diamond Icons looks great but they really need something that sticks long term. Topps Dynasty I thought was more Exquisite-like but they insist on making 10 variations numbered to 10. Just make the rookies numbered to /99 and let the hobby worry about the rest. The 2023 rookie class looks good and now is their chance. Otherwise acquiring Panini's Flawless and NT brand may be the next bold move.

Take your $1,500 and buy one single of a young star or top flight superstar. Leave the boxes for someone else to lose money on.

Your biggest obstacle is going to be redemptions. Topps is notorious for having redemptions in high end products, especially if the big hits.

With that said 2022 Finest Flashbacks seems the best bet of your list for long term value. Not sure what your sealed wax collection includes but getting a box of 2020-2021-2022 Finest Flashbacks would be a good long term hold.

Also, it wasn’t Uber high end but is now, 2019 Bowman (with Julio & Wander)… not sure if the autos are redemption though. Or 2018 Topps Sapphire if you can find it.

$1500 could probably buy you a case of my favorite product every year: Stadium Club Hobby

I think it is a sneaky long term pick given the general appreciation and love for it within the hobby. That I feel like has been growing consistently every year.

But the problem with anything but trying to rip of flip within the next 24 months? It has a TON of redemptions for key RC this year.

So this is a product best enjoyed young

The problem with the wax hoarding is redemptions that expire, so baseball is pretty much taken out of the "keeping sealed" equation..even 2014 Topps Dynasty had Maddux and Rickey Henderson as redemptions..Harper/Trout were redemptions a lot of years..even Jordan Walker was a redemption for his SP base auto in 2020 Bowman Draft..if you can find a product where a big player/card was not a redemption, maybe then go for it..but that's a tough find.

The best products to store/hoard are the Flawless or Eminence basketball/Football products from Panini, they don't have redemptions:

2012/13 Flawless basketball (The First Flawless produced)
2014 Flawless Football (The first Flawless Football produced)
--Any other Flawless Basketball/Football from 2014-2019
2014/15 Eminence Basketball
2019/20 Eminence Basketball

Not sure if it counts as a big product, but this year's brooklyn collection has live autos for just about everyone, not to mention a very favorable checklist.

The best value investment on that list long term is 2021 topps chrome anniversary platinum hobby at current prices - a product with zero redemptions and is geared towards player collectors with their attractive parallels and hall of famer on-card chrome autos. Sealed cases can be found for less than $1000. The 1952 topps design is timeless.

However there is one product on that list that has the highest ceiling, but I only share that information with my best clients

2022 unopened is being sold as if the next Mike Trout is on the checklist.

Doesn't seem like a good investment.

Not “top shelf” by any stretch, but I don’t see the harm in hoarding away some Topps Cosmic. The kids seem to like it.
