Smile 2023 Vintage Show Off Thread!

I will fall on the sword and start the 2023 thread with an odd start.

Yes, I am drawn to beater cards, torn cards, cards with writing, and extreme miscut cards.
Cards that get tossed or chunked in the bottom of boxes.

I guess I feel sorry for them...

I picked this up at a local show going thru a dollar box.

Card show at the Royal Oaks Elks yesterday. Not too much vintage there but did come home with these goodies (yes I realize The Kid isn’t vintage).

I love odd ball cards, I
I picked up a willie Stargell 71 topps, 3d looking misprint for a buck. I would post pics but have not figured out how after all these years.

I haven't been buying much recently. A few of my late 2022 pickups for my HOF PC.

Terrific color and registration on all three.

not in great condition, but that's okay. got it for about half of what they normally go for.

My first pickup of the year added to my Willie PC

1954 Red Man Willie Mays with Tab (probably would grade as a 1.5 or 2 due to some creasing and corners)

Got this back from PSA today

pleasantly surprised at a 3 b/c centering, but no creases and nice bright color

Wow some nice pick ups to start the year. Loving the Redman Willie Mays. I just got these back Sat from SGC. The Dorner is now the oldest Kansas City sportscard I have in my collection.

I am working backwards for my HOF rookies PC and the 68 Ryan and 67 Seaver are next. Going to have to sell some stuff to get into these cards. That is a gorgeous T206! Getting a 4 with that type of centering and registration is absolutely amazing!

Haven’t had a Henderson RC (last year of vintage, right?) in my collection for a few years but had the itch to add one again. Found this guy that I thought was really cool with a big chunky rough cut on top and some decently rough-cut sides.

Nice Mays p/u.
Hard to believe in less than 5 months Willie will be 92.

That Bunning looks amazing - especially for such a tough set.

This is a very nice pickup. Ive been looking to add one of these for a while but it’s hard to find one with eye appeal that isn’t overpriced. If this is for your PC - I assume you are going to slab with HGA and get a team matched colored label to detract from the rough top edge, right?

It is not perfect, but it is really hard to find cards like that from 1962. I might send it to CSG for $10.80 to slab, since I think cards like this are tough to get and deserve to be slabbed. The image of the Fox below is from CSG and they took a bad image. It is way too bright. Bought it raw off of COMC for $7 and it looked so good in person that I had to get it slabbed.

Sharing a shortened version of what I put in my 2023 maildays thread in the baseball section - full post here if anyone wants the long version!

(full backstory in the link above) - TLDR is I decided to hunt a baseball card from 1948 Topps Magic Photos.

I've learned that although I can certainly appreciate cards of the all time greats like Ruth, Mantle, etc etc, I still prefer picking up cards that I can find some sort of personal tie to. When taking that into consideration, the choice became clear - someone who is not only hands down one of the best pitchers of all time, not only one of the Hall of Fame's inaugural members, but also someone who played for a franchise that would eventually become the Minnesota Twins: Walter Johnson. I set out looking for a copy, and it ended up not taking long at all! A short while later, and:

Here are close ups of just the actual card itself:

The second unique thing that I found awesome about this card? It came from Chasing Cardboard! It just so happens that CC had listed a copy of this card right at the same time that I had decided on hunting down a Walter Johnson. When I saw that, my mind was set on picking it up!

The Walter Johnson was just one of several 1948 Topps Magic Photos that popped up from Harlan's collection featured in Episode 13 and Episode 14. I rewatched both episodes after winning the auction and couldn't spot this or any of the other Magic Photos while Ty and Mike were thumbing through cards. It would have been super cool if it had made an appearance in the show itself, but for me, just knowing it came from there is plenty. It adds a lot of depth being able to watch these episodes and hear about where this card came from, and I'm excited to continue this card's history!

Interesting story, very nice card.

Picked up a George Brett RC recently. Sold my previous copy a few years ago, finally got around to getting a replacement:

How much did you pay for the Brett if you don't mind me asking? I just got my 1975 Brett back from PSA and it came back a 5 as well so I'm curious for what it goes for.

I paid $130 in cash through a local dealer. Probably could've waited for a better deal through a future auction, but I felt like this one has some decent eye appeal.

eBay auction for that centering would go more than the typical PSA 5 through auction which is around $100. With taxes and shipping, there is no way that you would have gotten that card much cheaper!

That is an absolute beauty! That would be the exact type card I would chase for my future Aaron!
