Default Big Expired Redemption Pull, any hope at all?

A friend of mine has recently showed some interest in cards. He has no idea what he’s doing, none. Trying to navigate todays hobby landscape for a middle aged man is mind boggling. He’s only bought a couple things but has overpaid (a lot) both times. Anyway, he randomly bought a couple boxes of 2019 Bowman Chrome Choice thinking Julio was in there and this was the first card in first box….

Unreal. He couldn’t make sense of this “redemption” thing. “How can they expire?” I got a chuckle out of the logic a guy new to the hobby was bringing to the table. Anyway, he was bummed when I informed of the value and how tough this card was to pull. He’s the most positive and friendly guy I know and is holding out hope!

He will call Monday and then send it in and cross his fingers. I know chances are slim to none he receives the card but he will give it a go.

Anybody have some recent expired redemption stories to share to give him some hope?!?

Topps will tell him to mail it end and they'll send him some stuff, which will probably be worth about $20. They're pretty bad about expired redemptions.

Expect nothing from them. I pulled a 2019 Heritage Hank Aaron/Ronald Acuna Jr. dual auto in November expired redemption and they told me basically to go beat meat. I really hope Fanatics will remove redemptions from the playing field once and for all.

The only hope is that fanatics is taking over and maybe they are better about it. Panini honored almost every expired redemption I sent in but topps is a whole different animal.

No kidding. Im no lawyer, but I have a bit of common sense. my opinion it’s borderline criminally negligent for these companies to put redemptions in products knowing darn well many boxes won’t be opened until a couple years or longer after release. And now they have a $2-5k card (who knows what it’s worth) sitting in their vault that they can do whatever they want with…. Yes tatis signed them and gave them to Topps. They have his card but choose not to honor their redemption because it has an expiration date. PS why the hell does a baseball card have an expiration date? Is it like a loaf of bread? Will it grow mold and become a health hazard to consume?

Government needs to step up and make these companies put a disclaimer on the box saying “you may get an unredeemable redemption as your hit”

Sue topps and panini. Class action. They have hundreds of millions if not billions. They’ll be fine

At this point buying wax is a play stupid games, win stupid prizes type act. Not to mention the overpriced post Covid asking prices

That’s a tough one for them to fulfill if they don’t have any one hand since Aaron has passed. Would be an amazing card but I understand their stance on this particular redemption. Most others they should either have on hand or replace with something of equal value

It is printed right on the box that it may contain expired redemptions.

And you can't expect a company to store unredeemed cards forever. They use them to fill other replacements for damaged cards or redemptiins where the player never returned the signed cards.

Redemptions are fine, not all players sign in time. I get that.

But a redemption having any type of expiration date is asinine.

We can’t expect a company to store the cards forever. But we can expect a redemption card to expire with nothing being given? If a company wants to put autos in a product that they have not received and the company want the consumer to purchase the product based on these autos then there has to be “something” given. I think putting a major card as a redemption and then giving jack squat is horrendous. Somebody please name another business that does this same type of model? Promises something and then after a certain amount of time has no obligation to give you anything.

When topps puts a redemption for a Griffey Jr/Hank Aaron dual auto that has high value right from the start and everyone including topps knows it and then two years goes by and some poor guy pulls the redemption card and gets nothing. How can this be legal?

If he calls they'll simply tell him to send it in and around July or August 2025 he'll get a few cards worth about $25 as a replacement

What I don’t understand is why people pay the amount they do for old boxes of product that contain redemption cards for key cards.

Those boxes are priced as if those cards are live in the product.

They should be available for a half or a third of their peak when the redemptions were still valid.

i'd be concerned now that we've seen expired redemptions put into the 2022 Chrome Silver Packs.

I guarantee auctioning this redemption on ebay would get you a *lot* more value than anything that Topps would send you. A bunch of people would fall all over themselves for the hope that they could get it redeemed.

This is why Topps should hook up with COMC (After the expiration date) to hold the unredeemed cards and when a redemption card is pulled month or years later, you could still redeem them...
You would just have to pay COMC to redeem the expired card, like a 25¢ processing fee plus 1¢ a month, and a shipping fee.

They probably don't know or they're buying to hold and never open. Once boxes start getting up there in years, the cards inside may have issues but a sealed box maintains its value.

This could happen in time as the number of redemptions in products keeps exploding. Prices might stay flat but it's unlikely they will go down since sellers will still expect a premium for any sold out box.

Does Topps get rid of all their wax boxes product before these cards expire? The only thing that can be done if thats the case is stop buying wax boxes after the time the redemptions in them expire. If you stop buying them from the card dealers then they'll stop buying them from Topps.
