ebay cracked down on the sellers selling conterfeit stamps, but you can still find stamps under face value.
Don't buy if they appear to be obvious fakes.

I personally will only buy stamps from Costco or the Post Office. I tried buying on eBay but wound up with too many which were suspect and wound up pitching them in the trash, because I was too afraid of using them.
For my entire life, collectible postage stamp dealers have been offering unused postage stamps which don't have collector value for 90% of face. If you have a collectible stamp dealer in your area, you might look into it. Sometimes they will and sometimes they won't. But stuff shows up in collections and when it does, they sell it. Usually it's sheets from before Forever Stamps were a thing, so you might wind up with a bunch of 13 cent stamps from the 1970's or something. In a similar vein, if I were to buy stamps below face value, I'd look for an actual stamp dealer who happens to also be offering stamps for postage. I'd look for keywords such as "Face Value" which is a collector's term. I'd avoid anyone who only has stamps for sale. There was one reputable stamp dealer on eBay who used to list "fake counterfeit forever stamps" as fakes. He would buy stamps from the scammers and then post one for "sale", making very clear that it was fake and telling you why it was fake and how you could identify it as fake. That seller might still be around. If so, maybe you can look at their other listings and see if they also sell real stamps below face. Or maybe you can message them and see if they recommend anyone as a reputable seller. |

It’s a little tricky navigating through the fakes.
Do some image searches and find the original USPS page of the year/type of stamp you are buying. Make sure barcodes/other fine details of the stamp/packaging match up. Sometimes I’ll shoot a quick message just to verify that they are authentic stamps. Yeah, they could still lie…but I feel like if I get a nice response back that improves the odds. I feel like there’s tons of fakes in California for some reason. And don’t buy from foreign sellers. If it’s too good to be true it probably is. I’ve swung and missed a couple times over the years. Got some that were clearly fake—they felt like stickers. Good news … eBay will back you up if you have any trouble. Last edited by Andr3000; 02-15-2023 at 02:35 PM. |

I have purchased stamps on line 5 times now. I have had no problems. Prices running from $23 to $40.
The last 2 times have been from usstampsonline.com.
