So I want to get people's thoughts on this since I was thinking about it recently - the trend in general is newer cards for the most part have a high value or resale value.
Obviously, there are a ton of variables packed into this, the big ones being most players right when they are rookies have basically hall of fame trajectory baked into their prices and the demand usually at the beginning of a players career well be their peak demand assuming they are not the next Luka/LBJ/Steph. With that being said, ripping is ridiculously expensive to a point where singles still no where near the return you get on ripping. The quality of the cards has definitely improved but it got me wondering on how much of the increased value on the newer cards is related to the player themselves with their built in ceiling or just the general increase in ripping prices with these newer cards/quality of the newer cards with more premium Parrells. I am guessing its a blend but they are definitely at the same time more premium card variations available nowadays. I didn't look this up but my guess is a Devin Booker rookie auto /25 is probably selling less than a Cade rookie auto /25 and it just doesn't make sense but does at the same time. idk maybe a dumb post and I answered my own question lol |

..drives markets. Familiarity breeds boredom. That's why gramps shoots a salacious wink at the 19 year old blonde in Costco even though dependable wifey's at home replenishing the moth balls.

Couple of thoughts....
1) Panini is producing so many products, which means that any given player has a lot more cards out there in circulation. With all the parallels, the superstars have more cards released in a single year than players like Jordan/Bird/Magic did in their entire careers. 2) Which means that 90% of all cards being produced today are going to be largely worthless ten years from now. Some of the difficult/scarce insert sets with unique designs (i.e. Kaboom, Color Blast, etc.) will hold their values, just like some of the scarce and desirable inserts from the 90's, but that will be just about it. |

A part of me also thinks the price increase in newer products is helping the price increase in newer players absent the ceiling built in. Or maybe its just my hope that single prices will rise a little with these ridiculous prices that have been set. Idk if I can hear another breaker yell "Look at this value" or "Lets get you paid" after they pay $300 bucks for a team then there's only 1/20 of the return in value. I do look at this as more of a hobby but the return for these prices need to get better. |
