Default Marvel Studios What If...? Hobby Box (Upper Deck 2023)

Release date TBD. The set is based on a the WHAT IF series on netflix. Here's the description from a Blowout competitor:

Quote:
What If Upper Deck created a set filled with exciting tech cards from multiple UD brands and themed it to the impressive story telling of Marvel Studios' What If...? Season 1?? The outcome is nothing less than stellar and collectors will be taken back by what this set has to offer!

Acetate Cards:
  • Clear Cut Chapter - 81 Card Set following each episode
  • Acetate Originals - 18 Characters Cards

Marvel Masterpieces Battle Spectrum:
  • 2 Characters Battling it out from the series

What If...Zombies?!:
  • Highlighting the Zombie characters of episode 5

Black Diamond:
  • Using designs from the UD Black Diamond - Look for Stone Relic versions also!

Chase Big Hits:
  • Infinty Ultron Die Cut Metal Cards
  • Frozen in Time - Plexi Cards
  • Jambalaya Cards!
  • What If...Zombies?! Glow in the Dark Cards

Pack Hits: (on average)
  • [3] Base Cards
  • [1] UD Flagship Card
  • [1] Clear Cut Chapters
  • [1] Additional Chase Card

Box Hits: (on average)
  • [3] Acetate Originals
  • [1] 1990 Marvel Universe Dimensions Parallel
  • [3] Medallions
  • [2] Watchers Sight Cards
  • [2] Serial Numbered Cards
  • [2-3] Possibilites Parallels

Configuration: 15 Packs per Box, 6 Cards per Pack
They mixed and matched inserts from other Upperdeck sets to align with the WHAT IF theme. I don't see any preorders available but Google search results claims a Blowout competitor had boxes at $119 and cases at $1,380.00

Thoughts?

Without autos to chase, I wonder how many people will be interested in this. Maybe the Jambalaya cards will be enough?

Well... there is battle spectrum from MM, jambalayas, glow in the dark cards (???), diamond relics similar to black diamond (quad diamond relics/infinity stones going for 1-5k) and medallions (green/blue? Greens are going for 1-5k)... This box seem jam packed with high quality inserts for $119 its totally worth it compared to say marvel annual thats going for $90. Id pay the extra $30 to get the what if boxes if i stand a chance of getting a battle spectrum, diamond stone, green medallion or a jambalaya..LOL

I’m not familiar with most of the inserts so I didn’t realize they’re considered high quality and desirable.

Black Diamond was popular… obviously the autos in that set, but the fake diamond relics have a following too and should do well. Lack of autos shouldn’t hurt too much here since animation autos aren’t as popular as autos from live actions sets.

There was a What If series on Netflix? Is that already out?

Not sure if it was on Netflix, but its definitely available on Disney+ has Jeffrey Wright as the narrator playing "The Watcher" - I quite enjoyed it to be honest, pretty sure they confirmed a 2nd series is on the way

I think the OP is mistaken. But yes, Season 2 is coming.

I didn't watch all the episodes, but it's a well done show.

It was never on Netflix. It was a Disney+ Production, and aired on there in 2021. The new season should be coming out, and that might help interest in these cards.

No sketches? Zombie sketches would have been fun.

The glow in the dark cards might be interesting.

Really enjoyed the first season, it got pretty violent and hard edged with the arrival of Ultron later in the season. I woud put it up second best Disney Plus Marvel show below Wandavision.

I'll get a few packs on e-pack, but with no sketches or autos, and the fact that the Marvel characters I collect aren't in the MCU yet, not much with this set to grab my attention, or money.

They added some pics to the listing. I ordered a case for about $115 per box. Could be a fun break….especially with those black diamond cards.

I saw the sell sheet dropped.

While Im glad to see a cheap(er) Marvel box, not sure how much the set will catch on being an animated set. It's in that odd territory between art set and mcu set, but not really either. As a marvel art set collector, I like the insert designs pulled from those, but this is not what I collect, so wont be buying it. I can see a MCU set collector saying the same thing..it's nice to see the black diamond design, but those examples on the sell sheet look utterly different than the black diamond cards being animated stills. Plus the no sketches/autos.

I suppose if you are familiar with the series it would be kinda cool (Im not).

I agree with this. Marvel anything + epack = it will sell.

I’m not a fan of the series, so I’m not gonna touch it. IMO, is the worst Disney plus marvel show.

I'm not a huge fan of these multi-set sets, for lack of a better way of saying it. Let's stick in Jambalaya because we know it's popular. Let's put in the Black Diamond cards because they were popular.

Of course, these mostly come from sports anyway. Even the Frozen in Time comes from hockey releases.

I thought the show was something that was different and cool. Not sure I needed a season two, much less a card release, as these will all be shots of a cartoon, but hey, it's something different.

That's because we have different views on what's important to these shows. For me, character and power consistencies matter a whole lot, so seeing Pym easily destroying the whole Avengers, Thanos losing in a fight against two members of black order, Thanos being easily destroyed by Ultron, and other scenes, leave a bad taste in my mouth.
