Default Long Island National card show experience from a show newbie.

So today is the first time I went to a large card show, the Long Island national card show. Previously, I have only been to 5 other small card shows and my experiences were pretty disappointing. Without being overly critical, I want to recount my experience at the show and hear your feedback about my experience. I spend around 4 hours there and I’m not an investor, so the pool of cards that interest me are fairly small cause I’m only looking for cards for my pc, rather than finding cards to flip. I checked out various tables and most of the cards available for sale were either vintage baseball or super modern cards of various sports. My interest lies in basketball cards, specifically rarer kobe cards and late 90s basketball inserts and parallel cards. I ended up getting one card through partial cash and trade. I traded a Giannis rising tide rc sticker auto psa 9, a 2018-19 contenders optic Donovan Mitchell gold sticker auto, a 2018-19 contenders optic Magic Johnson sticker auto, and $200 for a 2006-07 finest kobe Bryant black refractor psa 10. The eBay comp for the kobe card was a single sale for $1,625, and I’m not sure if it’s even a legit sale. Seller was willing to accept $1600 cash, but because I want to do mostly trade, it was valued at $1750. What would you have done? I don’t know if I got an okay deal, but as long as I didn’t lose too much in value, I’m ok with it.

Card I received:

There was one card I was interested in but couldn’t get the deal done. I was interested in the 2019-20 contenders kobe auto #30 in bgs 9. He said the card was from 2019-20 contenders set, but I argued that it’s card #30, which should be a replacement card for higher end kobe redemption card, I even showed him a sample sale that showed the card in a panini case. However, he disagreed and stated that the card is a packed pulled redemption, so of course there are some in panini case. Is he correct? There was one past sale for about $2,700 for raw, but he wanted $3,300. I initially walked away, but I came back to see if we can do a partial trade and cash, even if it means overpaying, since I want to trade away some of my cards. He picked a ja morant origins rc auto #’d to 49 and I valued it at $900, but he wanted $2,500 plus that card for the Kobe card, so I turned it down. Was that the right choice?

Sample, not that copy:
kobe

I came to the show hoping to trade away some cards for my PC Cards. There were some demands for modern basketball superstar cards, but none for rare marvel cards. Overall, I did feel a little disappointed, mostly because of the lack of cards that interest me. Maybe I got a false impression from the YouTube card show clips. Maybe because I am in the east coast and most of the cards that interest me are at the mid west and west coast shows. Is that correct? Or should I simply avoid all card shows because the pool of cards I'm interested in is fairly small and I won't likely find the cards I want at shows?

I would of traded you a 2005/06 kobe 1 of 25 for that giannis alone tbh.

That Kobe finest black refractor is sweet no matter a psa 10 or nice raw version. I think you gave too much for it by like a couple autos. But I would've did the same.

As for the Kobe auto, it's an awesome card but like you said the guy wanted too much. I hate guys like that.

I think you are correct. I believe these were inserted live in the product and not via redemption. If it's still in the Panini case, it should be a replacement.

If I end up with one deal I am happy with, that's about all I expect out of a show. I have narrow tastes, too (primarily graded vintage basketball) so I just put on shades so I don't get blinded by the Aquamarine Jewel Parallel Rookie Scrubs and find the smelly guy in the corner with nobody at the table.

The worst is when I end up buying something I didn't love just because I felt like I had to justify my time and trouble. Now I try to keep my expectations low, or, more likely, stay home and browse the Internet where very few cards are hard to find.

So you think I overpaid/traded for the card and the comp is unreliable? I preferred the 2006-07 Finest black refractor over the 2005-06 refractor # 25, due to personal preference, it's the 1st year of Kobe wearing Jersey #24. I would have preferred a raw version though and avoid paying the hefty premium.

Thanks, I'm ok with the deal as long as I didn't way overpay for it. So I assume you mean I shouldn't have included the Donovan Mitchel Gold auto and Magic Johnson auto. I valued the Mitchell auto at $125, and the Magic auto at $90, so I may have overpaid by $215.

Thanks, I just checked the youtube clip of the live opening of the card, and card #1-17 are indeed inserted live.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMtac8-tk8U
If only I thought of searching youtube at that time, maybe I can convince the seller on a counteroffer.

Yeah, although the Kobe Finest Black Refractor is going to my PC, it isn't exactly on the top of my wanted list and I might have just traded for the Finest card just to avoid going home empty handed for the 3rd time. I do like the Finest card I got, but I wasn't in a hurry to get one and was mostly hoping to get some Kobe 90s inserts and parallels, like the ones I saw in the Youtube clip of the Burbank card show. I think I need to reflect on my experiences and maybe card show isn't a thing for me, at least not the ones in the East Coast.

I wouldnt have traded the Giannis auto , but thats just me. I would want a Kobe auto back in some form if I had to trade that auto.

Is it because you think I overpaid, or is it something along the line of expected future value of the Giannis card? If it's the latter, I am fine with it. The cards I brought along were available for trade and I'm not interested in speculating Giannis future potential cause I don't collect him, am not a fan of sticker cards, and I would rather get something I want now than wait to see if I can get more for the Giannis. Originally, I wanted $1,500 in value for it, but he said it was worth only $1,350, based on the latest sale, so I wouldn't be close in value to any of his Kobe auto cards (all $2.5k+).

Without researching any card values, I think you overpaid for the 2006-07 Finest Black Kobe PSA 10.

But as long as you're happy, that's all that matters.

This is how I see it too. I wouldn't have made that trade, but I am biased in that I mainly collect RC's and Autos. Yeah an overpay IMO, but again if it was something you wanted/makes you happy then so be it. I've overpaid or "over-traded" in the past before as well for something I wanted for the collection.

Did you see the normal overpriced dealers that frequent this show?

I don't know what you're talking about. I'm new to the card show, and have only been to 3 card shows in the Long Island area, so I don't know anybody there; I wouldn't know which dealers frequent the area.

I'm clearly the outsider here but if I was overpaying on both I would of tried to get the second deal done over the first.

The black refractor is beautiful, but having to give up the Giannis in addition to the rest is a bit rough, Kobe also isn't ever signing again obviously, to the point they had to make that special Mosaic set since they couldn't fulfill open redemptions so I think his autos will only get more scarce/valuable. I don't know any comps on these cards but I also think the value on Ja was good if he accepted that, people were saying his career was over a month ago lol and personally I'd much rather hold onto a Giannis and trade Ja, also would of saved $100 since he added to the value due to it being trade.

I hate trades for this reason, I get it, I def get it but you're already usually way under ebay comps at shows these days and then if it's a trade people want even more when they are literally at a show and can price it and possibly sell it in an hour at market price. If it's a lot of cards sure, and I know cash is king but charging over an extra $100 to move three cards, tech two since you are moving one in the transaction is kind of crazy to me

Clueless on more modern comps/autos so I’ll just say that’s a dope Kobe refractor. Great addition to a collection.

I recently overpaid/traded by about $200 for a Penny season ticket auto, I had already given what I felt was market in cash but I also threw a Chrome Kobe insert refractor on top. Zero ragretz. I have no idea how long I’d have to wait just to compete with someone for another copy with a decent auto as they’re extremely prone to being streaky and spotted.

With such a limited black Kobe refractor like that, in that high of a grade, I assume you’d be in a similar spot.

Man, you're making me second guess myself on the trade. The reason I didn't go for the auto is because I already felt that he overvalued the BGS 9 card at $3,300, when the raw was going for $2,700, there are other version of the auto card going for less for bgs 9.5 copy, and the event detailed in the card is exactly amazing, just another triple double game, as opposed to winning title, comeback against Portland, carrying the Lakers after Shaq fouled out against Pacers, etc; on top of that, he wants to deduct additional $100 in value in my Ja auto.

Thanks, I hope so. Since I already bought a finest black refractor, I'd figure I would try to complete as much of the rainbow as I can, so I just bought this lot on ebay:
Kobe refs

Sorry for the bump, but I'm surprised how much it went up. I'll probably bookmarked this to reference back to this.

I still have the card. Since the card market for Kobe has gone up, I was thinking of trading or selling it at a show to fund the purchase of a Kobe rc year card for my PC. I brought it to a show and then checked the price with 130point, it says the last sale was $4950 on 11/28, but somehow a vendor shows me 2 additional past sales in the early November at around mid $3,000, since I can't find those sales (I don't know why it doesn't show up in my 130point), I passed on selling the card.

Ha, I re-read through your first post thinking this was a new thread, totally forgot I had replied. All things being equal that’s still a trade I’d make. That Giannis is hideous.

Well, looking back, think you definitely came out ahead on that trade (though not initially!).

Last 2 sales for the Kobe black were $3.5k (few days ago) and $3.3k a month ago according to Cardladder.

I wouldn't say it's that bad looking, but I don't regret making the trade.

I was looking at the 130 point and it shows one sold for $4,950, how come cardladder shows those 2 sales I don't see on 130point and not show the sale for $4950, am I missing something here?
