Default Fair Deal? Or No Deal?

Hey all,
Just recently came from a local show.
Basically, have been hunting for a Mays Relic Auto. I won one on ebay, and then when it got to eBay authentication they said it isn't passing and sent it back.
Anyway, today went to a show and a seller had one of these (not exact one, but same set /25) and had it for $800.

He was willing to go down to $750 cash. I tried to entertain a cash card deal and he wanted this plus $400.

I told him I'll get back to him...

Thoughts?

I'm mostly a collector, and rarely sell anything I buy unless I have a dupe of that player or something.
So, it is a bit tough for me to split off from the griffey!

without looking in to it much, I would say 350 for an on card Griffey auto with a nice game used patch is a pretty lowball.

He wanted an Hank Aaron Quad Relic Auto /15 or Koufax Relic Auto /75, both super difficult to find. The other stuff I was ready to move were of less interest to him

Yeah, they've sold around this price recently
Luminaries doesn't have a strong resale value as something like Dynasty, etc.

Looks like this exact card just sold for 430 with others in that price range so 350ish seems pretty fair

You can slice and dice the numbers. You can internet search. But in the end, which card do you prefer? I promise there are a lot of Griffey and Mays autos out there.

For my money… that Mays auto isn’t an $800 card. I guess I need to go look at completed auctions. If Mays is selling for those numbers I might need to cash in!

Mays’ stuff has been trending upwards this summer. Been trying to pick up an 01 sweet spot auto since April. They were around $500-$650 around the spring and each auction seems to beat the previous one by 5-10%. Similar trends across all his early-mid 2000s autos. For $800 there’s better Mays autos available OP. I’d say hold out for an on card or vintage (60s-70s) auto. I don’t think the offer of $400 and the Griffey is out of place though. In the end it all comes down to w which card you like better

The problem is so many fake Mays autos. I forget which sets, but there are some early 2000s Topps sets which are heavily faked. So I'm super wary

Agreed. I've been aiming for a relic auto, as nearly all of my PC is that. Otherwise, plenty of on card autos. The only issue is that, as stated in previous comment, so many fakes of Mays. I have a fellow friend in the hobby who stopped me from buying one that looked so real and with the Topps sticker, but turned out it was 1000000 percent fake.
