Weren't his very early autos sort of like that? I can't say one way or another about authenticity, but I do think his signature changed after a year or two.

Yeah, here's a PSA authenticated early sig. Doesn't look like it matches up.

Doesn’t look right to me. The early autos had ‘wings’ on both M’s. And the M’s were never connected to the rest of his name like it is in this example.

The Y ending straight down, and the 'c' running into 'k' makes it look wrong to me.

Here's the rest of the story.
I lady friend in her 60's posted this on Facebook and to be honest I have no reason to doubt her story.
She lost her father a few months ago and has been putting up pics of things that she's run across while going through his things.

Why not lead with this?

FWIW, someday my kids will go through my collectibles and think they found a Michael Jordan signed baseball and they wouldn't have.

I thought it would be interesting to see the responses without the Back story. I openly admit that I think grading is a joke, and I tend to lean the same direction when it comes to autograph authenticating.
I sign my name multiple times a day and no 2 ever look alike.
Leading with the back story would have been boring.
I think it's a good thing for everyone to understand that not every message board member is an expert when it comes to authenticating autos, among other things.
I won't even bother replying to the post after yours.

Good for you. You’ve got some provenance there. Good thing too, because without it most wouldn’t believe it’s authentic…even with it I’m sure many would doubt it’s authenticity. That’s the most ‘unique’ looking mantle autograph I’ve seen. I’ve never seen him connect his first or last name to the initial ‘M’. The M’s are always standalone.

But inscriptions don’t make autographs authentic.

Wait, so OP posted a Mantle sig he knows looks bad and pretended to ask BO’s opinion on it… just have a little “gotcha” moment on us?

That’s sad. I feel bad for him.

Even with the back story, I think it's unlikely it was signed by Mantle. I think it's more likely signed by his wife on his behalf than him.

Definitely not The Mick's autograph.

Could be a non-malicious forgery.

Not even close. The picture looks like it was later in his career and there is no way that this signature is his. People simply don't realize that collectibles have been faked since the beginning of time. We tend to think of modern fakes like a Jordan RC, etc.. What most don't realize is that the Fro-Joy ice cream Babe Ruth is one of the most counterfeited cards out there for example. Also, I don't know how many times a person has told me that they have a Fleer Jordan RC that their Dad got 20-30 years, so they know it's real only to find out that it is a fake, not realizing that fakes were common back then.

Throwing an auto up like that is going to get the response it did from members in general. PSA and Beckett do take the changes of an athletes of the signature into account. All people can do is the best they can, with the information given. I'd still rather have an 80's/90's Mantle auto than that one.

Did Mantle sign like that in the late 60's or early 70's? He looks like he's in his late 30's, early 40's.
