Default Strange Auto

I found this Reggie Jackson auto in a PSA slab on eBay. The auto is graded an 8, which is ok, though I was thinking maybe it should have been a 9, but anyways, the grade is not the issue.

The issue is that this auto is so strange, and does not resemble the other Jackson autos that I see on eBay. Why is it so different? Did Jackson change his signature at some point?

I looked at the PSA cert online, and it checks out. So, I don't think this is a fake slab, or a fake card inserted in a real slab, but I don't know for sure, because I can't figure this one out.

I sent the seller a message, but he only replied with: "Couldn’t tell you. Just how he signed it".

What do you think?

Why even bother asking about that card? If he did sign it, maybe it was with his left hand. Maybe Reggie Jackson the basketball player signed it.

Card looks like a train wreck. Move on.

I collect HOF Vintage RC Auto, which is what this is, and was looking for one on eBay and came across this one. I'm just intrigued why PSA decided to authenticate this auto, when it is so different from the other autos that I have seen of Jackson.

Yeah, of course it's a really poor condition card, but that's not the issue. I'm asking about the auto.

I'm pretty sure he is saying the auto is a wreck, so why would you want to but it, even if you need an auto from Jackson?

As to your original question, most likely it was a quick in-person auto, but probably him holding it in one hand while signing with the other, and not using a table or flat surface where he would be able to sign like normal.

I haven't decided to buy it, or not buy it. I was just searching on eBay and came across this one, and was just trying to understand the strangeness of the auto, and thought maybe someone here had some info or experience with this.

Your explanation is actually very reasonable. This could be a quick on the fly, maybe in a hurray, and maybe he was not fully awake yet, lol.

The entire package is a train wreck. Auto included.

ETA: PSA/DNA routinely authenticates counterfeit autographs. Fake or real, I don’t know why anyone would want to own this card regardless of what the slab says.

Don't buy it. Even if it is legit, why would you want it? Even if there was video of Reggie signing that card, I would still pass on it.

“Card looks like a train wreck.”

The auto is on the card, is it not?

No worries, I'm not buying it. I'm looking at, and comparing, other ones right now.

Yes, but the condition and grade of the card and auto was not my question.

My question was: Why is this auto so strangely different from other Jackson autos?

And aggie4ever posted a reasonable answer.

Third party authentication of existing autos has many problems, it is silly to think someone can 'know' this card was autographed by him, and authenticate it as such. This goes the other way as well....Tom Brady could theoretically write nothing more than a dash for the fun of it, and that would presumably fail authentication....yet it was signed by him. Just read a thread recently on here where someone submitted a signed card to PSA twice, and it failed authentication both times, then on the third submission it magically passed.

So many questions with this stuff....personally I put little value on third party authentication of existing autos. My personal hierarchy of confidence in the auto probably goes something like 1)In person 2)witnessed slabbed autos (e.g. CGC SS yellow label comics and cards) 3)items manufactured with the auto (cards from respectable companies, easton press books, etc)................4)'authenticated' autos. The discrepancy in prices between official auto cards/CGC SS yellow label books vs authenticated after-the-fact auto cards/comic books means the market roughly agrees with this too.

I found a comparable auto. So, it does look like some of his signatures were done that way.
