Default PSA buys SGC

https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.co...o-acquire-sgc/

I thought this might happen but not so soon. What do you all think?

Should be blocked by the FTC, but they probably don't care.

But in any other industry, when the #1 company buys the #2/3 company, the government would step in to block the deal.

The two companies would continue to operate separately with the existing management team at SGC remaining in place.

“SGC will remain an independent grading brand,” said SGC President Peter Steinberg. “And no changes are contemplated. Joining forces with the Collectors team will allow SGC to double down on our strengths while greatly enhancing our capabilities to innovate and modernize our offerings moving forward.”

PSA has by far the largest share of the grading market. According to Gem Rate, PSA graded about 291,000 trading cards in the last week while SGC graded around 32,000.

Buyout the competitor= smart move by PSA.
SGC folks are SOL.
Say bye-bye to turn-around times & cost.

SGC is the main competitor to PSA in terms of vintage. There are many high dollar vintage cards in SGC slabs. If PSA shut down SGC, it would actually be smart move financially for them. It would be horrific for the collector, but imagine the revenue stream. What would vintage collectors do? All those high priced Mantle's, Ruth's, T206 cards would be in a non-existent brand. The could use SGC Florida as their vintage base and it would be cross-over income for years. 13 collectors might go to CGC and 3 collectors might go to BVG.

i had a stack to send sgc, i tried a small order with psa and it took longer than estimate and the graded insanely harsh.

now i have to decide with this buyout do i go back to sgc or just give in and convert to psa
their set registry is very nice feature

wouldn't that be a bit more of a plus with collectors? knowing that the SGC graded cards they have won't gain in total amount graded and stay in that limited quantity?

PSA acquiring SGC is a huge piece of news.

CCG is also acquiring JSA, another dominant move.

Beckett is in big trouble if they can not counter the above two market strategies.

Agreed, these are both huge moves.

If Beckett were smart, they should have some sort of $5 monthly promotion for grading to ramp up their numbers and give themself the ability to show off their sub-grades...which is still one-of-a-kind as a standard service in the industry.

Beckett is out there offering some 'deals' to try and attract group submittors but it's longer time and more expensive than the other companies, so pretty much on brand for BGS

The $5 promotion would do more harm than good. Would hurt turnaround times and would just put a lot of base card garbage into their slabs.

Beckett needs to pull the band aid off and not listen to their die-hard customers. They need to change to a Gem Mint 10 scale like the rest of the industry. They can still have different types of 10's, but this is number one. I think to distinguish themselves, all BGS slabs need subgrades. Don't make this an option, make it mandatory. They need to follow the old SGC model, which at this point collectors may have killed with turnaround times not being met. BGS needs to have great customer service, invest in making cards easier to submit through their website, and getting Beckett Magazine back in the hands of nostalgic collectors.

Since this is a vintage section, they need to kill the BVG slab. Have one slab and grading scale for modern and vintage.
