He just couldn’t stay away from the breakers.

It’s a shame.

I think I might die of laughter if I found out the one thing propping up this entire degenerate gambling hobby was Ohtani's money siphoned away by his interpreter one break spot at a time haha

In the unlikely event this is true I fully expect Omertà and the man(and his family)will be taken care of
From the looks of him in the article pic though he does remind me a bit if the dudes at the Gold Coast casino still throwing dice at 7am from the night before

This is weird.. yesterday Ippei said Ohtani knew of his gambling debt and agreed to give him 4.5M to pay it off. Today Ippei said Ohtani had no prior knowledge and did NOT transfer money to the illegal bookmaker.

If Ohtani DID pay off his 4.5M debt and sent the money to the bookmaker and not Ippei, that could be a serious problem?

If Ohtani paid it off I wonder what the punishment is.

Okay so now they're saying the 4.5M was transferred from Ohtani's account to the illegal bookmaker. Very bad. https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/1770...610587727?s=20

Ohtani’s lawyers realized that the cover story made Ohtani an accomplice to several federal crimes so they had to change it to theft

Pete Rose is now wondering why he never hired an interpreter.

Hate to be a conspiracy theorist but anything is possible.

I don't see Ohtani as being a gambler. We don't know these guys though.

Why would his interpreter have access to his money anyway unless he was his business manger which I highly doubt? Who would pay off a $4.5M gambling debt of his interpreter? How does an interpreter have $4.5M to gamble?

Anyone that wants to flame me should answer those questions.

I suspect the truth is closer to the interpreter's account than the Dodgers' account. Admittedly, I don't know what happened, but it was not until lawyers were consulted that this went from "friend helping a friend out of trouble" to embezzlement/theft. If the interpreter was embezzling millions of dollars from his friend/meal ticket, I doubt he would agree to sit down for a two hour interview with the press where he effectively admitted he took Ohtani's money and used it as his own, unless he knew Ohtani had knowledge and consented to it.

The skeptic in me thinks perhaps Ohtani and his buddy were collectively gambling on non-baseball (thinking it was OK or at least "don't ask, don't tell") with the interpreter handling the transactions, and then when it got discovered, created a cover story which would theoretically wall off Ohtani from culpability. When the lawyers got involved and saw that the contrived story was not enough to wall off Ohtani, they created the new story, with the interpreter taking the fall.

Such a massive lapse in judgment would just be shocking to me for someone who's so careful and deliberate in everything he does.

If Ohtani goes down for this, I'm officially done buying modern.

If it’s revealed Ohtani was involved in this, the Pete Rose situation gets a lot more interesting. They’re not banning Ohtani from baseball.

They havent said what the gambling was on, have they? If Ohtani is in any way linked to gambling on baseball, he is cooked.

I could see Ohtani bending the rules and betting on other sports.

I would be shocked if he bet on baseball. He SEEMS to have so much respect for the game.

At initial glance, this seems to be the answer. Ohtani bailing his buddy out. Lawyers caught wind and said interpreter, you need to backtrack, act like a thief because having a star wire transfer funds to an illegal bookmaker is not going to look good.

The articles states bets were not made on baseball. NBA/NCAAF/soccer. I'm sure that will be reviewed.
