Default Flippers - Best time to buy and then resell?

I have had this discussion with a lot of people at shows recently on when the best time to buy each sport and then when the best time to sell is. With this industry becoming more of a stock market than a hobby, what are your experiences?

I’m sure someone has put together some sort of graph or chart to show sales of specific cards over a length of time.

Me, being mostly a baseball guy (been a baseball card guy for almost 35 years) and just recently getting into football, generally buy in November and sell in February/March. Football “seems” to be best to buy in December/January and I would assume best to sell in maybe August.

Obviously this isn’t a perfect science and there are so many factors that can affect pricing one way or another; that’s why I am curious as to a general consensus.

Saying all of that, when is football “down” and then when is it back “up” in what you have seen? Does your location change this? How much does the draft affect prices on last years rookies? Have you had better luck selling before the season or during the season, hoping someone performs to your expectations?

Any and all comments welcome. How do you play the card market? (If this is some big secret that isn’t supposed to be talked about, I apologize)

Buy when low. Sell when high.

You got this one backwards...Its a hobby some try to play like a stock market, get burnt and then go away. Don't speculate on athletic performance, it don't work.

Meanwhile... Where's Davis Mills? (Tried to tell 'em)

I usually just wait for Floridacardguy to tell me which boxes to buy. Then during the spring I tune into his draft coverage for the 100% can't miss prospects, scoop them up dirt cheap, and sell for GINORMOUS profits. Been following this system since 2023, hasn't let me down yet.

If you did that, you'd be very happy

I guess I have been doing this all wrong. I usually overpay and then sell cheap. I fell in a pile of ridder hype and bought 3 PSA contenders for like 300 ea, I probably will be giving those away soon, or using as dividers in my storage cases. Funny thing was when I finally watched him play—I was like WTF. Somebody please post a burning money gif.

It’s not the stock market, but people throw money at like it is the stock market. It’s getting crazy for the ordinary collector. Trying to buy some nice wemby-cha-Ching. I guess stroud is the next GOAT. Just crazy.

It's tough out there. The boys and I had fun putting together Prizm, Absolute, and Rookie and Stars base sets but it took some time based on if we found it in the wild. Paying double or more for a retail blaster from a re-seller for retail is nuttier than squirrel turds.

Are you trying to say you tried to tell them? There were 20 posts in that thread more persuasive than yours as to not buy into Mills.
