Default Who’s slow start has the most hobby concern so far this season?

Whose slow start has the most hobby concern so far this season?

Lot of players through two weeks are coming out of the gates poorly.

Who's the most worrisome so far?

Wyatt Langford.
Based on Spring Training he should be a first ballot HOF by now. JK
He’s a perfect example about how no one should get hyped about ST numbers. In-season MLB pitching is dialed up and the quality of pitching is considerably harder. He’s hitting a respectable .261 but has zero HR and a 0.0 WAR.

Even though it’s how he evidently plays, always a bit of a nail biter how JROD takes at least half of a Season to start really hitting - but I have faith!

None of them. I don't put much stock in a small sample at the beginning of the season, when players are still settling in and weather is bad.

The only guy I'm legitimately worried about is Nolan Jones. His projections are akin to diet Kyle Tucker but his power has disappeared, his K rate is way up, and he has 4 errors in LF on 23 chances. An absolute nightmarish start to the season.

His zone contact was bad last year (low), but it's higher this year (good). His swinging strike rate is down (good). His O-swing (chase) is down (good). Called strike % is way up, and as expected, his swing % is down. Too passive? It's still early, but at least he's not chasing more or missing in the zone more.

Any RC logo of the past 2 years

There are millions and millions of cards produced, many RC logos being released during a players 2nd year as a big leaguer (non rookie year, whored out). Not maintaining high performance causing a drop in demand craters prices given the overwhelming downward pressure supply puts on prices. If demand dries up to balance that overwhelming downward pressure....poof

Would the direct old English translation for the title of this thread be:

“Who are thee bagholders walketh with buttocks clenchest the most tighteth?”

I really hope its just an attempt at an approach change, he's always been overly patient (imo) in the box. He's excellent at taking balls on the shadow of the plate, but at the expense of also taking meatballs. Will be interesting to see what his swing/take numbers look like once Savant has enough data to post the 2024 leaderboard.

I wouldn’t be worried about Julio. JRod is a slow starter, has been now every season in tbe bigs. I remember people fretting about Soto last year. On the other hand, it’s nice to see Trout mashing. Looks like the work he’s put in is paying off as he’s hitting the high strike a lot more frequently again

The year I go ahead and pick Devers, Judge, Goldschmidt, and Acuna for my fantasy team...sheesh.

Can't wait for the 2024 version of this 2015 fangraphs article. Small sample size obviously but it's a great sign that his fastball whiff % is back down to his pre-Covid numbers. If you can't reliably bust him in on the hands with 95+, he's going to mash everything else.

Of the guys I collect on this list (Acuna, Vladdy Jr., JRod) I am most worried about Vladdy Jr. by a wide margin. If he can't revert back to his 2021 form his cards are going to plummet (even more).

I am worried about Acuna's knee/health more than anything else, but if its just rust I assume when the weather heats up the home runs will follow.

JRod seems to just be one of the slowest starters in the league. Once he turns it on I expect another 5 WAR season.

If Wyatt Langford doesn't turn it around he will lead the hobby in bagholding. Huge amount of money poured in there the past few months.

You want Vladdy to go back to who he was 3 years ago? His ship sailed 3 years ago.

It can be tough with these things some times but I would preach patience with Vladdy:

He's 2+ years younger than Kyle Tucker and has 167 more hits & 29 more HR than him...

He's 1+ year younger than his teammate Bo Bichette (who has led the AL in hits 2 seasons) and has 54 more hits & 43 more HR than him...

He's very close to 2 years younger than Yordan and has 185 more hits and the same amount of HR than him...

He may be underwhelming for a generational superstar level player but he just turned 25 years old a month ago and there are still a few years for him to get back on track as he hits a normal player's prime. We just saw Acuna do this last season. Vladdy is 25 with 3 All-Star Games, 716 Hits & 133 HR. It's about as a great start to an MLB career as anyone could ask for.

Thanks for the perspective! I sometimes need it! I feel he needs a really good year though to keep his hobby appeal and not just be another good baseball player (not a super star).

Vladdy isn’t a generational superstar, he has been pretty bad the last few years and this season isn’t showing any improvement. Does this mean he won’t have a nice career, definitely not but hobby wise he needs a huge uptick in production to be relevant once again.
