Imagine thinking it was a good idea not only not transporting those items yourself, but sending it to a terrible budget hotel for holding.

I would like to know the name of the other auction house that did the same. Would never deal with people so stupid.

It sounds like they might have only been shipping catalogs.

Pretty embarrassing for Memory Lane. Seems like very few in this industry can competently run an auction house operation these days.

Even though ML did not have the cards it ran the auctions to completion without informing anyone -- thinking on 54 is that this was done to establish insurance value.

Who the F decided that shipping a box filled with $2M worth of baseball cards to a Best Western Motel was a good idea?

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

How are the thiefs planning on cashing in on one of a kind cards? Not as easy as you would think.

Like stealing the Mona Lisa - who is going to buy it from you and not be associated with the theft?

Pretty simple if they are smart. High end sports card collectors are a lot like fine art collectors and atinquities. If they can get something like these cards on the black market for much cheaper than normal they will not have any problems with the fact it is stolen as it will go into their private collections.

Not the greatest look for the auction house and if the article is true...that they shipped the cards to the hotel...a Best Western, of all places...so much for safeguarding collectibles which do not belong to you.

I highly doubt their insurance carrier will cover it. Not sure there is a carrier on the planet who would cover for theft after delivery so unless the hotel is considering accepting liability, ML might have to write that check, assuming the cards are not recovered.

Very poor common sense to ship anything of that value and expect a disinterested 3rd party to hang onto it for you. Where would they keep it? Underneath the counter where ya check in?

With high resolution scans, it'll be hard to sell these in the future. Even when the collectors passes on, they are still considered stolen.

There's a bunch of buzz about people using cards to launder money. Now there will be buzz about laundering cards.

Is there anything more "sports card industry" than shipping a million worth of cards to a Best Western Plus? Classic.

To be fair though, I think Best Western Plus is a little underrated for what it is.

I wonder if they'll break the box live online?
