Default Why is this card so expensive?

I found one of these in a box my friend gave me for quarter box cards. I was thinking it was 1.00 since it is a raw card. Turns out it is like a 50.00 card and the non reprint one is over 400. Why are these so expensive for reprints?

Asking price is not value.

I posted that as my first thought, then deleted it when I realized he mentioned the original was $400.

If you could finish those TPS reports, that’d be just great, thanks.

I think he meant non-raw (Graded version) is over $400 and not the non reprint version

This card has gotten popular as most cant afford the original version so the 1st reprint version become desirable. Same has kind of happened with the Michael Jordan reprints of the 86-87 Fleer as well.

Yea confusingly worded OP, but if the question is why does this 1983 Mantle reprint have value…there is nothing that prevents an official reprint from acquiring organic value.

It is from a specific, old, official release by topps in 1983. There are a finite number of them out there, susceptible to supply and demand factors. Not like it’s just a reprint copy card endlessly churned out, even today.

What also helps this particulate one,
-Card front looks basically just a 52 Mantle, without tech or logos you might find with a later reprint, like 96 Topps series.
-Since the actual 52 Topps mantle is out of reach for so many, this could be next best thing for “owning” that card…possibly having it fill a spot in a run or collection.
-As mentioned one of the very early reprints, if not the first.

For graded values being way up there, psa pop report says just 2 psa 10s and 11 psa 9’s, that seems like a little.

Isn't there an issue with these cards getting trimmed now too?

A trimmed reprint…smh what a collectible. It wouldn’t surprise me as anything with value particularly at higher grades is susceptible. Doesn’t matter what the thing is.

Yes, and of course, it has value now, so people will do anything for a buck

1983 is 10 years closer to 1952 than it is to 2024. Wild.
