Default Halo: The Series, Season One on Epack

Just saw this hit epack with zero fanfare at $15 a pack (LMAO). What is the appeal to this? It's a show that doesn't seem to have a lot of love from fans and there are no interesting inserts or hits to chase.

I think it’s cool that Upper Deck is attempting to expand out to find new collector niches. I just think they are overcharging those fans for this. We are in a weird spot with sets being developed during COVID when the whole hobby was going nuts, but now hitting when hobby interest has seemingly fallen off a cliff. Weird price for the current market but at the time the set was in its planning stages it likely seemed reasonable.

I did not know there was a TV show based on Halo.

This is such a bizarre, weak set. 27 digital base cards and nothing else except parallels. Confusingly, if I'm reading this right you can pull physical parallel cards from packs or combine cards to get the parallels.

Quote:
Odds:
This pack contains an assortment of Halo: The Series, Season One trading cards. Randomly inserted into these specially marked packs are the following cards: Silver Team (4:1), Riz Parallel (1:2), Cortana Parallel (1:6), Kai Parallel (1:26), Halsey Parallel (#'d 1-of-1). Stated odds reflect an average of the entire production run; no ratio is guaranteed to exist within an individual pack.
Quote:
Exclusives:
Collect and combine 5 copies of any individual Halo: The Series, Season One digital Silver Team card on Upper Deck e-Pack® to receive an e-Pack exclusive Riz Parallel of that card with the ability to have the physical card mailed to you.

Collect and combine 5 copies of any individual Halo: The Series, Season One Riz Parallel card on Upper Deck e-Pack® to receive an e-Pack exclusive Cortana Parallel of that card with the ability to have the physical card mailed to you.

Collect and combine 2 copies of any individual Halo: The Series, Season One Cortana Parallel card on Upper Deck e-Pack® to receive an e-Pack exclusive Vannak Parallel of that card with the ability to have the physical card mailed to you.
Also, the physical cards aren't even available yet:

Quote:
Please note: All cards and achievements (except for the digital 27-card Silver Team set) have been marked as physical pending on Upper Deck e-Pack®. Once the cards have been swapped out with their live counterparts, the cards will become physical.

And yet eight achievements have been redeemed already. Who is buying this? Why?

In my opinion, the show sucks. The people who put it together have spoken at length about how they did not play the games. You watch a show like The Last of Us or Fallout and it's clear those folks played the hell out of the games and really wanted to bring them to life. You watch the Resident Evil adaptations and Halo and you realize those folks couldn't care less about the games, almost as if they were ashamed to be associated with a video game.

I don't think the show sucks. Absolutely falls way short of The Last of Us and Fallout, but those shows are amazing and a really high benchmark to try to compare to. Halo could have been much better, but is still decent in its own right. Now does decent justify a card set, probably not. This does get me excited at the thought of a Fallout set though.

I quite enjoyed the show, its a little slow but I like the lore and the TV shows take on it is interesting imo. Having said that if there were autos or something I probably would have bought some, but only digital cards with parallels at $15... yea... no thanks...

I liked the show fine. I'd collect the cards if they had autos or sketches. No idea how Upper Deck thinks these are worth $15/pack. Even with autos and sketches that would be a really high price.

Anyone remember how when Epack started we were complaining about $2-4 packs of mostly digital cards? Who knew we were getting a bargain back then?

So, I have just seen this advertised based on the game...

20 packs per box, $150/box - has voice actor autos (meh) and sketch cards (cool) and lots of parallels as seems to be the norm for sets now. Also has what look like PMGs but only have the color at the bottom of the card, not the whole background.

Current release date of August 9th, ill probably pick a few of these up, much better option than the epack release imo.

I love Halo, I'm a buyer of the physical. The epack release almost seems like a Topps Now product where they print to demand

This set (this new game centric release) has been bumped back almost a year at this point. It was announced mid 2023 and originally was releasing in Sept 2023. It's been kicked down the street a few months at a time since. I'm just hoping that it doesn't fall into the X-Files and Chasing Amy purgatory that everything that isn't Marvel has become with UD.

Voice actor autos are great. Most voice actors have worked on multiple games/animation, so you can get some cool autos. I'd like to see more voice auto actors, maybe from an X-Men 97 set? We got several in the Looney Tunes set, and I collected all of those.

This is something I can get behind.

I’m a huge fan of the halo franchise, mainly halo 1-3, particularly the multiplayer, and I would love a release geared towards the game. I really, really tried to get into the TV show, but I couldn’t. It didn’t really capture anything of what made the video games special to me. Then again, how even do you, including the nostalgia for those multiplayer moments with a team, red vs blue 8v8’ing in sidewinder or blood gulch CTF via LAN back in the day. Or the competitive multiplier online. Maybe halo is just one of those properties that isnt all that conducive to a show or movie… but as a game it’s awesome.

Either way I’m not really a fan of the tv show. I didn’t finish the whole season, the first few episodes were enough. The writing, and the drab environments in spaceships, ehh. Maybe I didn’t give it enough chance. Unmasking master chief very early (first episode? Can’t remember) didn’t help the allure and mystery either.

I won’t be going for the show-based set, but def would be interested in a general halo set.

I love Halo, I just don't think videogames translate well to cards, Fortnite is the biggest game franchise out and the colorful characters lent well to trading cards and while there are some big cards I'd say it largely didn't move the fans of the game.

The main voice actor auto I'd want is Cortana.

Would be cool since you can edit colors in the game if they did something different and matches parallels with his outfit or at least helmet ie. 1/1 gold=gold chief outfit, Blue /99=Blue outfit, still have the numbering just think that would look cool especially the gold

The TV show has been cancelled after two seasons: https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/hal...us-1236075994/

This may alter any plans UD has for additional Halo: The Series trading cards.

Me either sadly. Season 1 Episode 1 started out so awesome, but it was mostly downhill from that. Too much story, not enough shoot-em-up.

Presales were at $149.99 just about everywhere. I thought they would come down after a while but I guess there's demand out there for the chief.
Bought a box before they "sold out" on DA.

eBay sales are all over the place. Idk if people have decided how much stuff is worth.

The Halo announcer auto went for $350 which seems pretty strong though.

Some really good names on the auto list but gosh darn is that list long. I’ll be on the look out for Keith David. Angry I missed one already.

May spring for a box though, cards seem to look pretty nice.

I'm a big fan of the original 07 Topps set and have a not small number of sketch cards from it and It's been a long wait for this UD set to finally make it to market. I originally pre-ordered boxes from BO back in 2023 months ahead of the original 9/2023 announced release and got some additional boxes and a blaster case from a competitor and then some boxes from the other competitor in the subsequent 17 months that this set has been bumped.

The retail component was pushed back a month to March as best I can tell (per SC), but most of my ordered hobby boxes have shown in the last few days and my LCS put aside a bunch for me and while they've still got a few more (as of this AM), if they're still there next week, I'll bring those home too.

I will be quick to admit that while the 12 sketch artist set was a challenge to put together in the subsequent years after the original set dried up, this set with what appears to be 71 sketch artists is going to likely never be completed by me. I was interested in trying to do the auto run and those 40 signors or theres about has me spooked as well.

This will be on epack eventually so I know that buying everything now right at drop isn't the smartest move, I know chasing the rabbit there isn't a smart move either, and just have to hope the chase to bottom works in my favor once stuff starts hitting COMC.

The asking prices on some of these autos is downright laughable. The only one I’d pay over $100 for right now is Keith David. Halo as a franchise is at its lowest point.

While I agree with you about Halo's current popularity, the autos are still commanding strong prices. Jen Taylor auto sold for $400.
Funny enough, Keith David being a major chase auto went for about $130 day of release. Steve Downes also sold for $115 day of release.
Those sellers are probably regretting it right now lol

Interesting to see where these prices level off. Hobby boxes continue to climb.

Steve for a $115 is a steal

Opened a Keith David with character inscription
