Default Is Joey Votto a HOF?

With his retirement announcement today, is Joey Votto a HOF? Or Hall of Very Good?

64.5 War, .294 avg, 356 HR, 1 MVP, 6x all star, 1 gold glove

I used to be a Votto skeptic for the simple reason that walks aren't as valuable as hits, but I think anybody who leads their league in any major hitting category seven times (OBP in Votto's case) probably gets in.

I think he's a guy who gets in with around 80% of the vote on his 2nd/3rd ballot, not a 1st ballot/90%+ guy.

He is an average HOFer. He is better than HOVG.

If he gets in it will be via veterans committee I don't think the writers will get him there

If walking was equal to hitting then the 17th all time best OBP player, Max Bishop should be voted in. The 2nd baseman in over 5700 PA’s, had a .423 OBP, .271 BA in the 1920’s.

A lot of players with high walk rates seem to struggle in the playoffs ? Votto, Bishop, T. Williams, Bonds, etc.

So Mickey Trout only had 100 more HR and 150 more SB (rounded)
Include Votto singles and Trout hardware
Pretty much same dude

I honestly think he what's in easily. He won't be lingering around on the ballot for a decade.

If Joey Votto isn't a HOFer than Ichiro isn't a HOFer

Yes - the writers love his sardonic personality…a guy like Carlos Delgado won’t get in with 473 home runs, but Votto will have all these writers citing all these nerd stats to elevate him as one of the greats deserving induction.

Definitely, not sure if he’ll make it on the first ballot, but I doubt he has to wait long.

I clearly stated "stats" are close. I'm fully aware Trout has 2 more MVP awards than Votto and also has 1 more MVP than Dale Murphy and Juan Gonzalez. We are all clear on that.

Their extra base hits almost the same. Trout does have the edge on steals but it should be pointed out that nearly half of his steals came in his first 3 seasons. His last 10 years of his career he averaged 11 steals a season. Yes, he had more than Votto but does it really matter much.

Votto had 300+ more walks that Trout. He had higher career batting average and on base % than Trout.

Just based off statistics, they are extremely close through 14 years. Now, Trout has 6 more years on his contract. When you look into stars like Miggy, Albert, Griffey, F. Thomas and see their decline post-age 32 we should see Trout's career BA drop 20 points to .279. His OBA should drop 40-50 points to the .370 range and all the sudden from a career standpoint we should see Votto standout in those career categories as well as be much closer in his lifetime OPA. Trout is better off retiring now so that he can maintain his current averages. That will never happen though as he no doubt will milk every last drop of his contract regardless if he ends up hitting like Joey Gallo towards the end.

I’ve been a huge Votto fan since his early days. Hoping he doesn’t make the HOF. Keeps prices low

Does it really matter much? I don’t know. You can make stats dance however you want them to

War and nerd stats already have trout as far superior and traditionalists would much rather have Votto take 4 borderline balls for his obp vs having trout launch a bomb

Maybe someday Votto can take his place right next to Harold baines

He'd going in the HOF for sure. Maybe not first ballot, but within 3 years of being eligible. He's easily as good as 2 harold baines
