Default Consolidate collection for a big card?

Have you ever consolidated your collection or sold off a major part of it to buy a big card? If so what was the card and did it feel like it was worth it?

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while. I’m slowly moving to quality over quantity. So far so good but no “huge” card yet.

Not really, no. The closest I came to something like this was when I traded a bunch of cards for the Ryan below. It cost me 35 different cards plus a set, and my 1984 Topps Mattingly RC…

Actually just did this. Noticed that the amount of slabs I have has been slowly increasing to the point where I'm going to need another storage box. Sold off a bunch of autos, vintage and rookie cards for a 1933 goudey babe ruth

Yes, but I usually buy the card first, then sell off some slabs to backfill the checking account void.

Always worth it if it's the card you want.

Last two that fit this definition for me:

Consolidating my collection was the best thing I ever did. I felt like I was aimlessly collecting so decided to make clear goals of what I wanted and put it into action. Went from a lot of cards I like to some cards that I love. No regrets.

That being said, I own a 1951 Bowman Willie Mays because of it.

Sold off all my slabs and any bigger cards and consolidated into just a few cards. I don’t care to have a ton of cards.

I use this method. The only difference is that I never end up selling anything after.

Great cards. I'm a fan of both. Absolutely cannot go wrong with Ichi or Hank RC's IMO

I’ve done it twice - just sold off two separate player PCs to buy these two cards. Paid $6k total.

I’ll probably do it again soon, as I have a personal grail card that I want by the end of the year.

Every time I do this on a small scale ( with Wax ), it turns my stomach afterwards. I don’t want to end up with 1 or 2 boxes as a Collection. The ‘sell it all’ for one big one is not for me.

I haven’t yet used to funds for a big purchase but I found a good way to pick which cards to sell is to set up a randomized tournament bracket and slowly eliminate cards that way. It’s easier to figure out which are the best of your collection if you’re comparing 1 card vs 1 card, rather than looking at an overwhelming stack of cards all at once.

This is a good way to do it

I only sell a few cards a year and almost always at a loss.

Am I doing it right?
