Just kidding… but how does UD fill the Marvel void?
They have the DC license but I don’t think the market will absorb UD cranking out DC sets in anywhere near the number of Marvel sets that they have pooped out the last 2 years. I think Upper Deck needs to get another big nonsports license or two beyond DC… what’s available? |

Haha…well they got DC and Looney tunes!
Idk. Marvel is so big because it’s an ongoing cultural phenomenon year in and year out, like Star Wars. They could do all kinds of random shows/movies that were glossed over before…Pirates of Caribbean immediately jumps out to me, maybe even like National Treasure. But this stuff is much more localized and not to the perennial branding like Marvel has. I think DC will be their biggest chance here to retain much of the nonsports interest from a pop culture standpoint. Art based sets in particular. The eggs will be in the DC basket. I would say make a move for the HP license somehow but that may not even be possible. Pretty sure WB has their own rules with that, and Panini currently puts it out in Europe.

Oh that’s right, forgot it’s all of Disney I guess. That would apply to the NT too.

There is one area that is still somewhat untapped imo: video games. Which are perennially relevant.
Particularly Nintendo. But again that’s so focused around pokemon and Nintendo might not want another company like UD to make cards centered around their star properties. Ok we’ve seen some Fortnite and Halo sets here and there. We’ve seen a smaller company than UD put out a capcom street fighter set. Could you imagine some of the Nintendo characters- Mario, Link, Donkey Kong as PMGs or sketch cards…I guess I could. Probably can’t happen though.

I fully expect the DC sets to follow the patterns of Marvel. Fleer Ultra stuff, Metal, Black Diamond, Allure. I don't follow DC, so those three could already have been announced for all I know. They pulled so many designs from hockey, then why not do it for DC as well?
I do wonder what happened with the Cryptozoic license. Again, not knowing about the DC market, did CZX lose it or is Warner Bros/DC spreading it to multiple licensees? I know some of the upper-end autos (Gadot, Affleck, Cavill) are quite spendy.

I can’t think of any individual license that can replace Marvel. Marvel is such a huge brand and frankly UD never seemed to do as much as it could. Then again, we don’t know what limits or obligations UD was working with. For example, and I’ve repeated this many times, having to put out a set for every Marvel movie and TV show. I have to believe UD had to put out sets for The Eternals and Moon Knight and didn’t choose to do so.
UD could spend the time and money going after smaller franchises but Rittenhouse has tried that and been burned. Umbrella Academy, NCIS, Lost in Space. Still, Rittenhouse keeps announcing new sets and new licenses, so something is working for them. Probably doing things at a much smaller scale than UD helps. UD still has some active non-sports licenses. Looney Tunes, Blizzard, Halo, James Bond. Overwatch and Call of Duty (e-Sports). Alien and X-Files, maybe. The problem is none of these can support multiple sets year after year. Star Trek, Doctor Who, and Game of Thrones are Rittenhouse, plus smaller franchises like Twilight Zone, Twin Peaks, Cheers, and Hunger Games. Lord of the Rings is Cryptozoic, I think, but Cryptozoic is also releasing some DC sets so maybe its licenses aren’t exclusive. Nobody has released cards for the new Planet of the Apes movies or the Jurassic World movies. I’d love to see UD cast a wide net, grab licenses for a ton of different movies and TV shows, but I’m guessing they’ll pump DC for everything they can instead. EDIT: Just thought of a few more movie franchises: Shrek, Avatar, Mission: Impossible, Despicable Me. All are aging franchises, however. Cardsmiths has a Golden Girls trading card set on the way.
One thing that used to be popular but has gone away are artist sets, like sets of paintings/artwork from fantasy illustrators or comic book artists. A lot of that stuff isn't as family friendly as Upper Deck would probably like though. For example, UD could commission a Joe Jusko fantasy painting set that wasn't Marvel-related. The DC license isn't a bad replacement for the Marvel license. There are a ton of movies and TV shows put out by Warner Bros, as well as all the comics. Batman is definitely the star of the DC license but Superman is fairly popular also. Harley Quinn is up there as well. Then you have the other majors: Wonder Woman Green Lantern Justice League Teen Titans Catwoman Flash Captain Marvel Batgirl Supergirl Aquaman And your more classic licenses could make some cool retro sets: Batman 66 Super Friends Christopher Reeve Superman Teen Titans Go! Tim Burton Batman Does UD have all the Warner animation licenses or just Looney Tunes? Because Warner owns a ton of cartoon properties like all the Hanna-Barbera stuff (Scooby Doo, Flintstones, etc.). In the comics they've done a lot of DC/cartoon character cross-overs. DC killed their live-action TV shows for the most part, but they have some Vertigo stuff on Netflix still like Sandman, Dead Boy Detectives. And the animation on HBO Max, like Harley Quinn, Kite Man, Suicide Squad Isekai. |

Yea I think for a lot of these, it just becomes too localized so won’t replace the breadth of Marvel. I can’t see them pumping out multiple sets, year in and year out for other franchises like Jurassic Park/World. One of the benefits of Marvel is plenty of it was art based sets and not confined to a movie. You can have unlimited sets of that, not based in any real time chronology…just get a different artist or same artist with different take, and the possibilities of art are infinite. This can’t be said for most of these film and show franchises mentioned. I doubt people would be going for James Bond art sets even if they did exist.
That is why I think DC will be in the drivers seat. And will be the ‘new marvel’ complete with epack and unbound and all. It’ll be an interesting dynamic to see how many collectors switch over or stay- did people really like the Marvel for the actual Marvel characters? Or did they like it for those other factors like set brand, PMGs, and ePack. Guess we’ll see soon.

I'm excited for DC personally. Much like the movies, DC cards are too few and far between (with the movies often being big letdowns). But I think Gunn will push the DC movie universe better than most of his predecessors. DC art/comic cards are a mostly untapped market and the movie universe has a ton of options for autographs down the road (already released and the planned universe).
I'm not much of a Disney person and never have been. Don't enjoy most of the MCU either. So moving Marvel/Disney to Topps/Fanatics is exciting for me. haha I'm probably alone here, but I'm stoked about this turn of events.

I personally would love to see a Seinfeld set, with cast auto's as the main chase.

This isn’t a brand/franchise (all the better for UD….no licensing cost), but I always wanted to see some comprehensive ‘science’ sets. They already did Cosmic, which seemed decently well received. But something much more broad- autos of famous contemporary scientists like Neil Degrasse or Dawkins, cut autos of past ones like Einstein, Hawking, Sagan, etc.
This certainly is not something that replaces anything like Marvel…that’s for DC to do…but just something I’d like to see.

There are many other entertainment properties other than Disney that are ripe for a set.

Yes. Fanatics announced it publicly a couple of days ago. First (non-UK) set will be Q1 2025, an X-Men '97 Chrome set, I think. Moments later UD sent an ePack email saying ePack stuff would still be there.
Other than that, no specific details, dates, etc.

Never mind just saw spidey hits video.
Well first product will be finest x men If it anything like Star Wars it will be very bland and very expensive Don’t want to be overly dramatic but there is not much left I enjoy Remember just 10 years ago where the industry was fighting the monopoly 10x the market. lol |
