How do you generally value these? Is it valued closer to a Bowman 1st/RC or is it treated more like a 2nd/3rd/4th/etc year card?
To clarify, I'm looking at a Jackson Chourio 2023 Bowman Draft card. He was drafted in 2022 so his Bowman 1st is from 2022, but his rookie cards are from this year. Hence the question. |

All Prospect cards. I think Aaron Judge is going to be the best example of what you're looking for in him being the star that he is. His 2013 Bowman 1st Year stuff is expensive. However, his rookie cards didn't come long until 2017. So in between you have 2014, 2015 and 2016. His 2014 stuff is getting higher and higher. Particularly graded stuff has taken off. His 2014 Bowman Draft Paper were only $25-$35 in PSA 10 for awhile. The last I checked a month ago they were about $99. I'd imagine 2015 and 2016 are a lot less than that.

I completely ignore them. I put them below 2nd and 3rd year major league cards. And this coming from a person who prefers the 1st Bowman and doesn't care that the number on the back of the card contains letters to skirt a ridiculous agreement between mlbpa and topps.

The cards are sort of fillers, like base cards of veteran star players, but they might have some novelty if a player’s big league RCs hasn’t come out yet.

This kind of branches to a different topic, but how do you value 2nd/3rd year cards vs 4th/5th/6th/etc... cards? Do the 2nd and 3rd year actually carry a premium? Is it as simple as the further you get from a player's rookie year the more the value decreases? |

I collect Soto and 2017 Bowman cards are not of much interest to me.
Looks like I have about 3 of the BC refractor, and only this year did I pick up a '17 Heritage minors card. At least they should be cheap, so still fun to collect.

Any non-1st Bowman is irrelevant to me unless it’s a gold or better. I’ll take a non-1st super of a guy like Soto any day.

I’m in the same boat as OhioLawyer. I don’t ever search out non-1st prospect cards of the players I collect. If I like the image or design of an insert for 2nd, 3rd, 4th year major league cards for my guys, then I’ll happily add them to my collection. The price has to be right though. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, etc year cards are all lumped into the same boat for me. I don’t put any extra value on year 2 vs year 5.
Like just about everything in this hobby, it comes down to personal preference and collecting what you enjoy! Create your own roadmap and do what fits your goals and budget.

All pre-RCs are a complete mess. Some show players correctly on their MiLB teams, some do not, but should all be treated as novelties.

I see them as a chance to get a decent price on autos but otherwise ignore them.

Personally, I only enjoy collecting the Bowman Chrome 1st Autographs. There’s something about the early autograph of your favorite player on a Bowman Chrome. Everything else in between the Bowman Chrome 1st Auto and their rookie cards are “just another minor league card” to me. I have no interest in them at all.

I have a JROD PC and I have maybe 3-4 of his non-1st pre rookie cards. They're all really low end parallels I picked up at shows out of dollar or $2-5 dollar bins. I basically just buy them when they're cheap and I think they look cool I doubt they'll ever really be worth much.
One thing I do like that many don't are 1st year Bowman's Best autos (so for JROD that'd be 2019). I think in many cases they're just better looking cards than the 1st Bowman autos and they're far cheaper. Again, not a great idea from an "investment" perspective but to each their own. |

The factor you should consider are player collectors going after those cards. Serial numbered parallels in graded form should have decent value. If they aren't your thing, so be it. Collect what you like.

I don’t think anyone likes them and the price reflects that. You get noobs on Reddit who don’t know any better who might pay a lot for them but that’s it. If it’s not first Bowman it’s an afterthought. If you like prospect cards buy em.
