Default 2024 Fleer Ultra Matriarchs of Marvel

Upper Deck still has some Marvel surprises to unveil. This set was rumored to exist based on information from sketch artists that glorbgorb shared in the What's next for marvel cards? topic. Scifi Cards spotted it on the GTS calendar. The release date is December 11. A Blowout competitor has listings for boxes and cases but no prices yet.

The title is an odd choice. Dictionary.com defines "matriarch" as "the female head of a family or tribal line," "a woman who is the founder or dominant member of a community or group," and "a venerable old woman." I guess you could consider some of the female characters "the dominant member of a community or group" but I wouldn't call Jubilee or Firestar or Dazzler or Psylocke a matriarch.

The set name is odd as previous sets were "Women of Marvel" and then there was the all-female "Marvel Gems" set.

Probably Disney vetoing the Women of Marvel name as being too exploitative or something.

I was just thinking the same thing, how different the set looks from those late 2000’s and early 2010’s women of marvel sets. I don’t think a “Dangerous Divas” set would fly with current Marvel/Disney lol.

Reflection of the change in era from a decade ago I guess.

As someone who is really into the medallion inserts, if the designs they are putting out there on the sell sheets are sticking, the set is a pass for me.

I collect the fleer ultra line, likely due to nostalgia, but also due to the medallions and jambalayas. I don’t see jambalayas in this set and the medallions seem to be getting worse.

The FUA amethysts, sapphires, rubies and emeralds all had a foiling effect whereas the FUW and FUMS just have a dull straight up color. The only real improvement imo was the deeper red Rubies of FUMS and FUW over FUA.

A little disappointed that I won’t be going after this based on the lack of jambalayas and the medallion redesigns.

I have a few boxes pre-ordered, only because one of my pc characters is in it.

Real question: what is the difference between this set and Women of Marvel (DACW exclusive)?

By the configuration, it looks like WOM was originally intended for retail, like the old Walmart exclusives for Civil War and Homecoming

I thought the same thing when I saw the Women of Marvel hanger packs. It’s a bizarre situation if UD had a retail product planned only to repackage it and sell the entire stock to DACW.

I had no idea there was going to be a "Women of Marvel" exclusive set. It's going to stay a buyers market heading into the new year with the flood of Marvel cards. Topps doesn't have a chance!

I actually stumbled upon the Women of Marvel listing maybe 40 minutes before DACW posted its Wave Two deals. I immediately went to Google and found no info about it anywhere. The item details say it was released on November 22 but that can’t be right. Somebody would’ve found the listings they went live a week ago.

I used the DACW contact form to ask for more details and if there was a multiple case discount. I thought maybe I’d get a deal on a neat set, maybe a set with a limited print run, something fun to rip that went under the radar. That idea went out the window when the cases turned out to be part of the Wave Two deals.

As I write this cases are at 40% remaining. I’m now waffling and not sure I want to spend $580 on a case when I don’t know what the cards look like. Original artwork? Comic artwork? And we don’t know odds on sketches or the metal cards.

LOL, first thing I did was submit the multiple case discount quote form. Multiple cases net you about $2.60/case discount.

I did end up ordering one case though, just in case this turns out to be a sleeper. Looks like a formulaic Topps release with a kajangle of parallels but no real hits even though it's a UD release

Of WoM? I must have just snuck in my order, about 10 min before you posted this.

Cases of Women of Marvel were absolutely sold out, there was even a box to enter your e-mail to be notified if they were available again. In fact, they're currently listed as "Sold Out" on DACW's Black Friday deals page.

And yet I was just able to add 43 cases to my shopping cart. I guess DACW found a few more cases on a shelf somewhere.

I've had a completed AP from (I think) Michael Hraba for probably 7 or 8 months. I was worried this set would never release.

Overall, though, I wonder if there will be any more stealth releases like WoM. Sell all of one product to one seller seems easy, though, from UD's standpoint is it any different from a distributor?

Excited to see the checklist for this set. Hopefully we get some cards of some new characters with not many cards

I opened my three boxes from Scifi. With no checklist I have no idea what Firestar cards I am missing.

What are your thoughts on it opened and in hand, glorbgorb?

I like the set overall. It's hard not to give it points right off the bat for original base art. With 100 cards and just female characters, there are many I simply had never heard of but the artwork is great nonetheless.

Plenty of Medallions and base Blue parallels. Nearly all cards are the typical thick Ultra stock, which is a plus and a minus. All the base cards have "Silver Classic" on the back, as if those were supposed to be a parallel (as opposed to having "Base" or just nothing).

No quality issues from what I can see.

I'll take some pics and do a mini review like I did with Women of Marvel and Christmas Story over in the box breaks section.
